Mid July update

After a horrible winter in which I lost several plants including nearly all of my palms, Edith Bogue was killed back to the ground where it continues to languish, Osmanthus Goshikii never had a chance, an official low of -8F, although I never recorded lower than -5.5F and 3 straight months where the high rarely got above freezing, I had to redesign, replant and move many things.

As many of you already know, I am not computer saavy, so I had to wait a month for my wife to download some pics. I did take more today so hopefully I will post more soon, but then again I said that at the beginning of June. I need to update my pics again soon though as I didn't notice how much things grew until I looked at these pics.

A couple of surprises, I never did get a pic of the whole plant, but my 2nd year in the ground hardy agapanthus got 4 blooms this year

My palms took a beating this winter so I either moved or composted them all and turned it into a veggie garden. No collards for carl. I barely get enough sun here to be foolish enough to attempt one in this spot but all of my sun is inthe front yard and I don't feel like putting a veggie garden there..

Fliementosa bloom well over 7 foot tall this year. My wife is 5'10" for scale.

bradleyo I am glad to be the first one to say your garden looks great. Lots of colors. How do ya like that persian shield? I'm thinking about getting some for my next year tropical garden. BTW you mind stating where you live?

Cool. Is that a baby monkey puzzle tree in the first pic?
I would like to know where you live too.(at least your zone) I like your plants!

Concur: Just about anything that will germinate in hot soil. I plant mostly southern peas and lima beans in July. Common bush beans in early August. Squash will also work as will cucumbers but pickle worms can give you major trouble. I start broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower in mid-late July in a cool shaded bed. Transplant in September. Nevr been able to grow Brussel Sprouts in mid Georgia. Turnips, mustard, komatsuna,kale, rutabagas I start direct seeding labor day and make successive plantings until mid October. Start onions in September, transplant in December. If you like melons in the fall, both cantaloupes and watermelons will make if you can control disease.

Hey Tokyo My bulbs run the gamut from doing great, to no evidence of leaf emergence. My new seedlings are doing well. My 3 "Picotee" seem weak, with yellowing of the leaves. Two "Apple Blossom" have obvious mite damage that I must address soon. After they sent up scapes that soon fell, my three "Chico's" have not shown an emergent leaf yet. After much reading, I have come to the conclusion that I watered the "Chico" too much. I planted 6 bulbs of what I think is "Red Lion" and one is showing a tiny tip of a leaf beginning to emerge after 3 weeks. My single bulb of "Germa" had 4 blooms on a single scape. She is a really clean greenish yellow, and, all of my daughters-in-law and granddaughters loved this little Hippi! My 4 "Lady Janes" did absolutely fabulous! Four huge double blooms on each scape. Stylosum is shooting-up some foliage and, I can't wait to see these incredible veined blooms. Vittatum is one vigorous growing Hippeastrum! My others are too new to tell anything yet. Ray

Soil is really warm down there - even under the mulch hay where I had the potatoes it's about 56. The rows where I wanted to plant the edamame (actually more like trenches - where the tomatoes drowned in 2011), with just weed cover is 70! But I noticed that areas that are normally soggy with poor drainage aren't now. Not that they're dry, the weeds seem to be doing OK in the trenches, but the flatter area across the road from there where the manure pile is isn't squishing as I walk on it. And the deep pit at the end of the trellised trenches I filled with chicken manure and sawdust, where I had all the volunteer tomatoes last year b/c it's glacial till underneath and doesn't drain (I never had to water those volunteers last summer) has only a couple small weeds growing in it. We've had just over an inch of rain this month (TWC says we had 1.5" last month but Dad didn't mention any the night before we got back from vacation so I'm not sure about that day). We got just 1/100" yesterday (supposedly - my rain gauge broke and I haven't replaced it). We're expecting more next week, but of course it's too far away to tell how much - just a 20-30% chance early in the week and supposedly more later. But it worries me that we're getting 1-1.5" when we should be getting 4.5" a month this time of year - it's been below normal for almost a year now, we didn't even get as much snow as normal. Reservoirs and ponds are still looking OK, but our springs aren't running like they normally do - the one that feeds our pond isn't making it all the way there any more, and the one that runs along our driveway (we had to put in a culvert when we built) disappeared a month ago. The only thing that's keeping things green is the snow melt and that won't last much longer. I'm wondering if I should scale back (though I've spent money on supplies, incl. lumber for hoophouse) this year, just sell my plants and keep a small garden near the house for us. I haven't sent in my fee for market yet. I just don't want to spend $200 for market, $50 for insurance certificate, and bust my butt (and run the well dry) all summer hauling water out back to keep the beans, edamame, 100+ tomatoes and 50 peppers watered and then find (like I did with peppers and onions last year) that it wasn't enough and I don't harvest (m)any. Awesome pics! I cant imagine how good everything must look now! I love the curves in the planting beds! I wish I had the skill to cut my lawn into beds that well!
Sorry to hear about your palms, but one thing thats for sure is that your yard looks more tropical than ever despite the cold winter! Looking forward to some more updates!

earthworm - I love the Persian Shield. I'd grown it several years ago but have had a hard time finding it at a reaonable priceand hadn't been able to propagate it. I bit the bullet this year for $7 per gallon for an annual. I'm taking cutting and trying to root them in water. So far still alive. I live in North Central Pennsylvania in Dubois, about an hour WNW of State College, the coldest zone 6 in America. Depending on what site you look at our Jan avg highs/lows are either 28/14 or 31/17? I'm a little warmer than the airport official readin which is about 150 feet higher in elevation. Lits of microclimates here, I'm about 250 feet higher than in town where they seem to get half the snow but are considerably colder.

Hunter - I've always wanted a monkey puzzle, but I think what you are referring to is a cactus, and I believe it is cylindropuntia imbricata. E-mail me at brm olshanski @ yahoo.com and I'll send you a cutting. Sorry for the chopped up e-mail address but I don't want to make life easy for spammers. They are a piece of cake and totally winter hardy. Those are third year from a very small cutting.

Nice garden, I like the imbricata I just planted some this year and has just started growing. What type of an agave is that, looks like a havardiana? If your like me in a couple years you will not have to mow the front yard.

chad - i lost the tag on the agave. It's either a havardiana or a parryi, I would guess parryi. I'm with you, if it was up to me I wouldn't have any grass. That circular center section of grass in the front yard may turn into a large water feature.
