Mardi Gras blooms!!

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to share my first blooms of the season. I got this healthy rooted cutting on eBay last month. It took about 3 weeks to finally see these beautiful flowers. I'm very much in love with MG right now!

The first bloom emerged when the temps were in the 60s. After a hot and humid weekend, the second bloom appears today with a wonderful contrast in colors.

Welcome antonia! Glad to have you on the forums ;-) I have grown 'Mardi Gras' for four or five years, Coppelia for two. So far the Mardi Gras has shown itself to be superior in the fact that it starts to bloom earlier, blooms longer, and just seems to be an overall robust grower and fast clumper. My Mardi Gras began blooming the start of July (sometimes end of June) and is still going. If it performs the same as years past it will take a little break in Aug. before starting up again for a fall blooming. My other two Helenium (including Coppelia) are still in the bud stage- will be another couple of weeks before they open. To my eye, Coppelia is more deep reddish color when it first opens. As the blooms age they turn to a burnt orange/copper shade. Has the slightest hint of yellow around the edge of petals. Hope this helps you some ;-) CMK

my mistake on the Faisa 'call'. It's Rh. Lavendula which is stunning come fall/winter when the leaves are a beautiful plum color. It's probably just as pretty then than when it's flowering.

She really is a special flower, between that color pattern and the petal shape--gorgeous! Lonnie, do you find the petals thin or thick? I never got MG because the small blooming cuttings seemed to have small, thin flowers. Haven't seen blooms on a decent sized tree yet to compare.

Hi Kasie, I can smell your flowers.. so so beautiful.. boy that fireworks, Tillie hughes, all those beautiful hot colors are really something. The color break is neat on some..but think it was not kind to plastic pink..Love your blooms. Well cannot add too many..but finally Daisy Wilcox did bloom for me, not many buds, but am delighted. Is a very large flower..here it is. I have about 14 in bloom, so exciting for me..have one more to bloom..then..will enjoy I believe what I have. Karen B

I have always liked mardi gras. It has such a different look about it. Thanks for the pics. Hope mine blooms well this year.

I have 2 new blooms that open today! Temps are in the 80s now and my plumies really love it. I still bring them inside at night because it still gets to the upper 50s here.

kms2, houstontexas123, and Laura, thank you so much! Laura, I saw from your post that you have so many inflos appearing...I can't wait to see those beauties of yours bloom for you as well!

Jen and Bill, I agree with you! MG has got to be the most unique one I have (hence, my favorite!). Her scent is different as well, I smell a peachy and floral fragrance. Bill, I bet you have a large MG tree in your garden, mine is only about 18" tall so there's no way these blooms can compare to yours. Does your MG bloom true to her color in your climate?
