I live near Tarpon Springs, FL, a largely Greek community. Using cuttings, I now have two brown fig trees, four black fig trees (from Greece) and two white fig trees (from Greece I am told). I grew them all from cuttings. No idea what varieties they are. I've been reading the forums about how to grow figs from clippings. My family in Louisiana always had figs, so allow me to share how we do it. I bring a jar of water out to the tree, and using simple shears, I cut a few foot-long limbs. I immediately put them in the jar, take it inside, and put it in the kitchen window. For three weeks, we keep the jar topped up as the water drops. After three weeks, the leaves have all fallen off, but down in the water, we find a lot of little white bumps on each cutting. Then we take potting soil or potting mix, and just pot them. In weeks, the buds begin to leaf. Oddly, one of my white fig cuttings produced a fig while still in the water. The leaves dropped but the fig remained. Now potted, the tiny fig tree is quite a sight with it's one growing fig. Anybody wanting to see this oddity may email me for a picture. You might then also tell me what varieties I have. You might find using 2 forks, back to back (but slightl;y overlapping at the times), pushed into the centre of the plants then forced apart, works well to separate recalcitrant clumps of rootage. Smaller plants can be divided with trowels. This works well for me with fibrous rooted plants. However, if yours is geranium maccrorhizum, you can indeed root the sidestems in your preferred way (I like to put 4 or so in a litre pot of chick-grit and loam and leave in the greenhouse until spring) although, to be honest, I find this works better to take the cuttings earlier in the season before the stems start to get a bit gnarly...... I find it quite tricky to stop later geranium cuttings from rotting off unless I give them some bottom heat (and of course, I don't). I think some people will plant the cuttings directly in the garden, often under cloches or jars.......

I have rooted them in soil with rooting hormone. I just took cuttings dipped in hormone, put in regular potting soil, covered with a clear pastic dome, kept moist in a bright place. Did not have a high percentage of strikes but some of them took.

I am in the process of transplanting my water-rooted lavender to soil. I am using a combination of the methods described above + one other which I can't find, or I'd link to. I add wet soil to the container (wet so that the soil doesn't rise to the surface.) I add some pebbles to keep the soil down. The article that I can't find said to use soil withOUT fertilizer bec the fertilizer could burn the roots, but all I had when I decided to start this project, was soil with fertilizer, so that is what I'm using. The article said to daily pour out a little water, and add more wet soil. I am doing this every other day to give the roots more time to change over. It has been about 6 days -- so far so good. The method says after a week, see if the roots are rooted in soil, and if they are take the whole thing out and put in container with soil. I will let you know how it goes. appreciate all the advice given above.
