Those of us in temperate zones with healthy economies have a romantic view of the tropics. Born of periodic vacations in properly landscaped beachfront hotels with air-conditioned bars. We watch as the breezes shuffle the palm fronds to and fro.

The reality is that, most people living in the tropics are dirt-poor; living hand to mouth week by week. Heat and humidity are oppressive and it rains almost every day.

Still, we dream...................................

Throw in some humidity and some water and your palms will grow a foot a day :-)

Oh yeah, at 5pm it was 93F here without a cloud in the sky, breeze less than 5mph out of the SW, humidity was 66% presenting a dewpoint at 77F and a heat index of 106F...and it was like this since 12 noon after waking up to my "low" at 80.8F this morning with dew on everything....when you hit those numbers for a week, talk to me! lol.......that's tropical and the palms LOVE IT! oops, I'm bragging again...Greg in HOT DRY Tampa Bay

Always found it interesting how narrow the view of "tropical". There are places within this zone that hover on freezing year around, rain totals are measured by decades.Places that snow year around. What "tropical " really means is no climatic changes based on temp. changes.
"Seasons" are measured by rainfall totals "
Actually heavy rainfall areas within the tropics are the smallest areas particularly on a year around basis.
Most "tropical" areas have sharply defined zones measured by daily temp changes rather than per year. The primary reason for this is altitude change. So given areas tend to have the same temps year around rather than sharp differences by season as outside the tropical zones.
If I were to live in the tropics I'd definitely stay above 5,000 feet lol. Every year I look forward to "winter " more and more lol gary

you couldn't be more right. In addition a lot of northerners only go down to Florida in the winter when the weather feels like a typical northern June. We had some warm weather last week (mid 90s but the humidity was about 29%) and people complained "it's so hot". Ya if you stand in the sun 95 is hot but if you were in the shade it's not bad. The past couple of days have been a diffirent story.

Where are you at. I though you were in NYC. I know it's not that hot there. I've been to Vegas when it was 114 "dry heat" that's a load of crap. 114 is hot, I don't care what the humidity.

Check out the yearly averages in several places within the tropics such as Mexico city.Lima Peru .San Jose Costa Rica . compare it to Puerto Limon less than 30 miles away!! Now that's "Paradise." gary

the weather data i posted was death valley, just for kicks, not NYC, we'd all turn into dried up bagels if it were 115+ every day!

Here we've had a typical summer so far, average highs in the mid 80's with lots of upper 80's and low 90's mixed in, nightly lows upper 60's to low 70's, today there was a tornado in brooklyn if you can believe it! the storm cell dropped 3 inches of rain in an hour in some parts, there was flooding in the subways and trains were not running this morning. not fun.

Currently 96F and expected to reach 100F by 4PM. Most of my palms are thriving in the heat but I think the Trachy's are just tolerating it. Supposed to be over 100 for the next 2 days. I love summer in the midwest. I really do. The heat feels great. But I'm glad I have A/C to sleep in.

yeah Andy, why cant you run your A/C...Florida would be H**L without A/C no matter how much I brag - it gets tiring without the rains (this year). Greg (the Braggart - just wait til January when its 75F here and y'all have snow lol)

Something is wrong with the way the water is draining when I run the air. It puddles on my basement floor. July (with the exception of a 3 day stretch) was so mild that it wasn't a big deal. This past 10 days has been brutal. I could sleep ok all nights except Tuesday night. It was so humid it felt like sleeping in a bed which had had water poored on it. Last night was SOOOO much better. Through all of this though I've seen about the best two week stretch of growth for my palms. High 80s through the weekend then low 80s after that. We still could get another hot stretch but the odds fade with each passing day.

I'm with you xerophyte, if I hadn't been born here in Florida, I would definately live somewhere up north. You can always get a greenhouse, also it would be a fun challenge to try trachycarpus, rhaphidophylum, sabal in the ground.

I hear yall whinning about the heat. Its been 100F here for the last 2 days and one more day tomorrow. Whats the problem? The humdity is out the roof, its hot, and the palm trees are green. hehehehe, I love the south, I am also starting to like winter, something I have never done before. I must be getting old....lol

Well I was able to get my air fixed last night. Just in time for Mondays cool down which will probably be for good. 86 today, 90 tomorrow, 93 Sunday, and then low 80s for as far as the eye can see.

Meanwhile after another somewhat chilly night just as some of my more difficult tropicals are starting to make fast new growth after over two months of up and down temperatures in my
area , which isn't far from Andy, I still wish at least my summers were more consistent for more tropical like weather though I admit those very humid hot days we've seen a few times here are nearly unbearable for me comfortwise , and then
did someone mention all those many exotic parasitic diseases that are so common in the tropics? Mosquito netting required perhaps and even a dip in a seemingly safe and pristine waterfall pool might mean some invasive parasite can enter your body even as you rejoice in the cooking off process! None the less , searching far and wide there may be a few rare spots in the tropics where the temperatures and humidity are comfortable nearly year round and diseases are minimal, and of course all those wonderful flowers and plants etc.

You guys kill me :) Right now it is 9:30PM, 90F, not a breath of wind. Condensation is so consitant on the outside of my windows that algae is growing. These conditions persist from May 15 to Sep 15. I haven't had to water my yard since March of 06. I remain in employment exile here. I raise Caryota no & gigas, pineapples, orchids, heliconia rostrata, plumeria, angiopteris and amorphophallus titanium. The winters can be tricky to protect from.

I love the summer time, especially here in South Texas. Our normal highs are around 95 and our normal lows around 74. We usually have the afternoon sea breeze here, so even though the humidity is high, you don't notice it as much. The other day, I went snorkeling at South Padre Island, and the water was beautiful and clear, and there were lots of beautiful tropical fish on the jetty. That is something you can't do up north, and you can't grow coconut palms outdoors up north! The high on the island that day was a pleasant 90 degrees with a gentle sea breeze. Perfect weather!

I was born and raised in Abilene, Texas, where it is really cold in the winter (normal annual lowest temp in the single digits, with windchills in the 20-30 below zero range occasionally). So I have seen all the snow and ice and cold weather I ever care to see! Now, my idea of a "white Christmas" is a beautiful white sand beach, blue water, and 78 degrees on Christmas Day!

I prefer the summer here over winter. I think it is too cold here in winter. When those nasty cold fronts com e down, the wind blows, its overcast and in the 50's brrrr - it happens more often than you would think. It just lasts only a day, maybe two. Then it is 70F and usually very sunny and dry in Dec/Jan with that occasional freeze or near freeze - who says we dont see season s? We just dont shovel snow, scrape ice OR throw salt. Greg

I think the best time of year in central Florida is by far the winter, the summer is WAY too hot. Some of my palms actually seem to grow better here during the cooler months.

Im starting to like winter more and more also,I think im getting old too and im only going on 27,our christmas is usually in the 50's with strong sunshine,it feels great, no jacket even,and it snows just the right amount,only a couple times a year and only a couple inches, if that.I used to think it was too cold here but it could be worse,I could be in Michigan.In the summer they say that the dry heat isnt so bad,but when Im outside watering my plants and its 100 degrees it feels like your in the hot sun infront of a heater,I really look forward to that 10 to 15 minutes of rain we get every now and then,but the humidity sucks, im thankful we dont have that here.

Take a look at this, it just reinforces that I am glad about where I live and I get to enjoy some summer heat but not for months on end

I refuse to turn my heat on in mid August. I don't care how cold it gets. Actually it's suppsed to be 90 in a few days which would be perfect after all of this rain. I think I may have to build an ark. We were a little over an inch below normal year to date for rainfall. Between yesterday to tomorrow we are suppoed to get about 3 inches. What's wrong with Port Huron? I hope you have an ORINAL copy of your birth certificate. A photo copy will not get you over the bridge.

My wife grew up in Sarnia and half her family is American including her mother who is from Port Huron .I think its funny how her Aunt jeri who is a woman...lol who is also from Port Huron, when she says Port Huron - it always sounds like she is saying port urine with that michigan accent. We have this place in Ontario called Ingersoll - everyone from that place calls it fingerhole..lol - Actually I accidently lost my birth certificate twice in the last ten years - So I have a fresh brand new copy my wife keeps for me, she is the adult in our family.I heard it will be warm but with rain - I have put all my cacti and succi under the table so they will not rot. The picnic(good turnout) was cold but the rain was very light - when we started packing up at 530 it started to poor. A 1 hour wait both times over and back on the bridge. I wish this rain would stop we need HEAT lots of HEAT!!! - I'm not ready for fall

Its been in the 90s since the begining of june and wont change until the end of the month. Then it will be lower 90s and upper 80s until october.Then it will be middle 80s to lower 80s.After that is paradise for 4 months.

Us Michiganians don't have an accent Eh (lol). Except for the Upers who also like the phrase eh. At least I didn't think so. Us midwesterners have a very bland sounding voice.

Our high was 63 today and about the same for today. We really start to fall off in September. The average high for SEP 1 is 79 and 68 for SEP 30th. I have yet to be able to keep my most "tropical" palms outside through all of September.

You guys up north send us some of that cool weather! I am sick to death of this heat day after day after day. Palms love it although it is starting to get really dry.

Come on Sun break through these clouds and bring it on home. Dew point of 74 come on down!

The next 5 days we are supposed to get rain, I cant wait,its still been in the high 90's here,a couple days ago a small town in eastern new mexico hit 111 degrees,the state has been breaking records this past week.I did some new landscaping yesterday and that heat killed me,wore me out.

25 degrees warmer than 96 hours ago. Now were are talking.
