Question about the July sale in Houston area

I was planning to make it to Clear Lake for the June sale, but found out this morning that it will not be possible. How does the July sale compare to the June sale? I live in central Arkansas and would like some information before I make the trip. I am really disappointed not to be able to make it for the June sale. I actually made hotel reservations yesterday. Luckily I decided not to save money by making reservations that could not be cancelled. Thanks if you have time to respond.

I think the Ft. Bend sale is a bit smaller but still lots of vendors and plants.
Barb went to it last year I think. Honeybunny are you out there?
Sorry you can`t make the sale, I have friends coming down for it, they spend the night on the island, we`re all meeting for dinner at the Spot up on the Seawall that Friday.

Thanks for replying. I'm really disappointed that I can't make the June sale. My mom is having hip replacement surgery on the 30th and I'm it for helping her. I may avoid the board for the days after June 8 so I won't be too jealous. Hopefully I can make the July sale.

Here are the ones I recall: Amalfi, Ambience, Amsterdam, Aphrodite, Apple Blossom, Black Pearl, Charmeur, Cherry Nymph, Christmas Gift, Clown, Faro, Ferrari, Gervase, Hercules, La Paz, Lemon Star, Minerva, Misty, Monaco, Nympha, Orange Monarch (or Soverign?), Picotee, Piquant, Red Lion, Red Pearl, Rock n Roll, Samba, Vera, White Lady, White Nymph, Zombie And there were potted offsets of H. Johnsonii, Moonlight, Lady Jane, and Clown. The rain kept the crowd small for the first hour or so, but I imagine that the afternoon brought lots of people in as the sale was at the Hermann Park Garden Center. Patrick from the list was there, so always great to see a "face" from the list. I practiced masssive self control, since I already had most of these. For the most part, the bulbs I bought were in good shape. A couple of the consignment bulbs were unpleasant surprises when I got them home out of the paper bag/paper towels. Next time...I'll unwrap them in the car. Hey, even the mail order houses send a dud every now and then (those layers of "black" deep within a bulb always make me nervous!). I think the bulbs may recover from "the problems", so keep your fingers crossed. Hey....the prices were right!! and the bulbs were (for the most part) very big! ;-) Kristi

I had a plant sale this past year. It was such a good experience that I will be doing it again. I did try to sell some new wsn plants from this past winter, but found that the older plants went much faster. I had to divide a lot of plants (not winter sown), but a lot of plants which I sold were from winter sowings in the last few years. Some plants, such as Coreopsis Domino which I winter sowed a few years ago and reseeded nicely,had footings which were 1 foot in diameter, so they were split in 4. Other plants were just one year old Echinaceas with good footings. I started potting up wayyyyyy early. Some plants were already in the holding bed in pots and simply had to be plucked out. :O) Nothing was more than $3.00. There was a tag with color and name of the plant. There were three long sets of tables, one at $1.00, the second at $2.00, and the third at $3.00. On the tag was a colour - red for the dollar plants, green for the two dollar, and blue for the three dollar. This enabled my family to help out since they only had to look at the colour to determine the price. The three dollar plants sold out in no time. They were in pots no less than 5.5 inches. Two dollar plants went well, and the $1.00 new winter sown plants barely went. I planted those back in a new bed which I intend to dig up again next spring and sell at $3.00 each since they will be much bigger. From 9am to 11am I made $700.00.

Checking in a year later! I did visit Houston and was surprised (I don't know why - it makes sense) to find local plantings almost identical to those in my part of Florida (large west coast peninsula - Pinellas County). My hostess wasn't crazy for gardens, but I did drag her to visit the "Beer Can House" and stroll that neighborhood where I filched a few seed pods from a vine on a fence ... it has grown for me and has turned out to be a scarlet runner bean ... new to me. We were enchanted with the nursery that features large playful topiaries lining the roadway medium nearby - but couldn't stop to investigate. And next time I will get to the gulf or a lake!

I've had a number of patio sales that went well for me...the reason I say for "me" is that last year two friends brought things over to sell as well...I kept telling them to price low and it will go. By 11:00 am they had made just under $200 to my $700. If people see higher prices I believe it turns them off. Who cares what you paid for something...it's not worth that used. I've always advertised having things for men too (tools,etc)...it keeps the the ladies browsing longer if hubby is busy :) Consider having a box with kiddy things that are either extremely cheap or sometimes free (1 per child if free). Kids are great cutomers! I have to agree with those that mentioned plants selling well, they do! I'v put out barely used makeup items that flew off the table ..can you believe? Yet don't we all have things we've brought home, tried once never to use again? (it can be cleaned with wipes) And jewelry for sure. Bottles of water are a real money maker, especially on a hot day. If you're able, coffee in the morning. One thing that I won't put in are sheet sets...even though I tied them with nice ribbon they ended up open and strewn over the table numerous times. Unless you plan on hanging them on a hanger so people can look don't bother. Nice kitchen items (bowl sets, appliances, serving spoons) sell well. Donate cups and glasses that have no mates, for the most part they sit cluttering up a well thought out table. Keep re-arranging your area, filling in empty spaces. You'll be able to show off something that might have been overlooked at first glance. I always have music playing, usually instrumentals (no head banging)and love watching who starts tapping a toe. Signs into the home that say "family only". And always a sign at the entry that says "we love making a deal, just ask!" And there will be those return customers...the ones that are 1st to the sale, run off to the next and realize yours was the best to begin with :-D

Gotta take care of mom. I live back in Texas because my mom was in a serious car wreck in 2000 and has been having health issues since then. I was living on a cruise ship and fixin` to move to Paris to work for Silversea cruise line. But you only have one mom

Joan, I went to the second sale in 2011--when they had it in Katy--and the June sale last year. I can't say I saw much difference in their inventories.

I picked up eight plants in 2011 and two in 2012 and felt there were many, many more left behind that would've made me happy. Don't worry, you won't be disappointed by the July sale!

K and I went to the Ft Bend sale last year. Kwhite, if you want plants, contact the sellers in Houston, pay for them ahead of time thru paypal, They can either mail the plants to you for postage, or you can pick them up at the PSA sale. If you are just 5 minutes late to the psa sale, the best plants are gone. So its best to have pre arranged sales, and the price will be less than what you pay at the PSA sale. Barbra

Barbra's right--there's no way I could have snagged that huge Lemon Drop if I hadn't pre-paid. On the other hand, I did pick up a very nice 3-tip Heirloom near the close of the sale. The price tag must've scared off the not-serious collectors ;-)

If anyone has time to email me information about Houston sellers who will pre-sale for the July sale, I would appreciate it. I have gone to Emerson's website, but when I try to access the information about the plumerias that are for sale, I get an error code. I would like to attend the sale -- just for the experience, but since I am going to travel about 500 miles one way, I would like to buy some plants ahead of time to be sure I don't go home empty handed. Thanks for all of your replies.

Joan I had the list of all the sellers and their contact numbers, but my husband cleaned out his office after he retired and threw out all my information. It took me months to get my friends phone numbers. I did send the information to several folks, maybe someone can help you. You can contact Emmerson, by email , and Tex you can call on his old phone number 409 767 8135m but he has moved from Texas and now lives in Homestead Fl, l will list what Barbara Randolph has for sale, she is getting a price list together for me, and I will list the information if you like, or you can email me for it. Joan, after I sent it I found out Tex and Kay Norwood have moved to Florida Colors, so that info is no longer valid. But they should be at at least one of the shows, so maybe call Florida Colors directly with your special requests.

YEA!!! Finally ready for Texas!! We are leaving for Texas in the morning, (Wednesday the 29th). The trailer is ready and all the Plants for the Texas PSA Sale ( more info at www.theplumeriasociety.org ) will be loaded tonight. Well over 500 plants are making the trip, and the list keeps growing as Carol and Kay keep adding to the list. I need a bigger trailer! We are bringing grafted plants, rooted plants, And cutting.
