triangle palm as houseplant?

My local Sams Club just got in a few 6" potted triangle palms (dypsis decaryi) that are abuot a foot tall. Cool little palms. I read that they can take the low humidity of a house in winter. Has anyone tried these?

They are great palms, go buy yourself one! If you do put yours outside for the season, be careful about sun scold. If the palm was growing under shady condions in your home, it will burn unless you introduce direct sun gradually. Put it in either a SHADY site or one with early morning or late after sun at best. Let it dry somewhat between waterings (even more so in the winter as an indoor plant). Yes, they tolerate drier air better than most palms it seems.(Watch for mealy bug or scale over winter--as with all palms.)

OH YES!! Buy one. I had one given to me two years ago. It spends the Winter inside (zone 5) and will actually put on one leaf in the Winter even thou watering is at a low. I take it out in April and put it in the greenhouse and I swear, while in the greenhouse you can almost hear it growing, it grows so fast.

Triangle Palm Indoors

I purchased a triangle palm about 4 years ago at Home Depot. It is probably my favorite palm tree that I keep indoors. It seems to thrive without much attention. Each Spring I move it outdoors, gradually get it used to the strong outdoor sunlight, and bury the pot in the middle of a circular raised flower bed of cannas and elephant ears. It does great whether inside or outside. One year, I took it outside too early and it got hit by a frost even though I covered it with a blanket, and it lost most of it's fronds, but it gradually rebounded and looks better than ever. So apparently it is not very tolerant of any degree of frost like my Windmill, Mediterranean Fan and Pindo Palm which I keep outdoors year round with protection. Unfortunately this species is very difficult to transplant, particularly at that size (the larger, the touchier). And if you say the root ball was ripped out of the ground, there is almost no chance of survival. All the superthrive on the planet may not save this one. I wish you the best of luck, but you might start looking around for a smaller, potted specimen to put in its place.

I put the stamp of approval on this one also. Get one! I got several. They do great! I have a big on in a pot.
