T.S. Hermine Bringing Rain, Wind, Possible Flooding

Well, here she comes, folks. Tropical Storm Hermine has made landfall in Mexico and crossed over into Texas and is headed our way with lots of moisture, some wind, and the possibility of flooding or flash flooding.

This probably is the drought relief we've been craving or at least it is a start.

Depending on where you are in Oklahoma, you may see anything from no rainfall to lots of rainfall. I've linked the webpage of the Norman NWS office below and you can see projected rainfall totals there.

If you remember when the remnants of Tropical Storm Erin hit Oklahoma a few years ago, you may remember that some areas got a lot more rain than was forecast either because she stalled and sat over the same area for hours or because the training effect carried storms repeatedly over the same areas. So, remember that projected totals aren't engraved in stone.

If you just planted seeds and they haven't sprouted, cross your fingers and hope heavy rain doesn't wash them away.

It will be nice to have some rain, though, won't it?

It is already raining here in Love County, although I haven't looked at the radar to see if this is rain from Hermine or just a little pop up shower.

I guess all my turnip seed was washed away with out last heavy rain.

Kneewalker, your past experience sounds so normal and natural. Can a person still do that there? We're on the old Oregon Trail, or off it by a few feet, don't know exactly, have to go to the exhibit to see for sure. However, this was such a swamp nobody settled this spot. I've planted lots and lots of native trees here. But not only natives because I love lots of different kinds of trees. Aiming for maximum jungle beauty here, and green, green green green green. Did go to a few native nurseries 1st thing when bought house and bought whatever they had that might tolerate swampy conditions. Every tree except alders; the alders were too brown too early in the season. One little tree sold to us as a sitka spruce is actually a white spruce, but is doing well even though we planted it in a really wet spot. If these yellow flag iris would colonize our creeklets it would really help our water flow problem. Of course they've suddenly sprouted like gangbusters just where I thought they couldn't, on a raised bed in partial sun that has to be watered every day in summer. Thinking since all those seeds didn't do anything, this winter, January when most dormant, will dig up a lot of super crowded iris and plunk them down into the creeklets with a little 4-way-blend topsoil over them. And take the thousands of new fall seeds and throw them on the top of the ground in the creeklets. Somehow or other I'd like to visually see our creeklets which wander and thread throughout the yard stuffed with the waving fronds of these iris. It would mark the water so ppl wouldn't accidentally fall into the creeks. When the grass comes up they aren't visible. Of course if we didn't have ppl wander in through the gates and traipse around to gape we wouldn't have to worry about unwary folks falling into the water, LOL We and our yard guy know where the creeklets are. Spruceman posted a study showing that Giant Sequoias and then Norway Spruce do really well here. I've only planted 2 Norways because by the time I read that had already planted 17 Giant Sequoias plus lots of coast redwoods, dawn redwoods, sweetgums, deodars and other potentially enormous trees so just not enough room. Planted lots of thuja plicatas, Western Red Cedars, one of my favorite trees. There's not enough natural land left to worry about invasives. There's not enough rainfall accumulation anymore to get new trees established the way it used to be. The summers are hotter and longer and the sun more ferocious. If anything becomes invasive it will be something more drought-tolerant from warmer climes that is able to establish any foothold here -- and not even then. Man values his bulldozers and scraped scorched earth more than living plants. The natural world is decimated. The carrying capacity of the earth can no longer keep up with rapacious man's destruction. Just take a plane ride over this whole area and look. What was once verdant thick riparian green is now brown. Compare with old aerial photos. Devastated.

If Hermine was the last soaker you had, no wonder y'all are so dry. It was our last big soaker, but it rained on several different days in May and we had about 6" overall. That gives us about 11" for the whole year. While 11" isn't much, I feel fortunate to have had that much. This week we had 4/10s of an inch and you cannot even tell rain fell. This morning on The Weather Channel they showed how much rain parts of Texas, Oklahoma and the surrounding states would need in order to put an end to the drought, and for most areas in Texas they showed 15" and for Oklahoma it was 12-15" for much of the state. It will take either one big tropical system or several smaller ones to give any of us that kind of rainfall, and it looks like Don will be a small one. It still would be a start though, and the drought relief has to start somewhere and sometime. Why not now for parts of Texas?

Hi Scott, Well, if the squirrels are an indication (grrrr! They're just large rodents with cute fluffy tails!), the nuts must be worth having? The squirrels are in the tree daily collecting nuts. Then they chew through some of them, green husk and all.....are they nuts? (pun intended) Why don't the squirrels wait for the nuts to mature? Judging from the half-chewed ones the squirrels are dropping to the ground, I think they look pretty filled out. The first 6 or 7 years we lived here, we hardly EVER had any squirrels bother anything. The last couple of years, though, we've had gazillions of them. The only difference I can think of is that Sheila, our Australian Shepherd who HATES squirrels and used to chase them endlessly, is now deaf and half-blind so the squirrels don't have her harassing them anymore. I bet the rain misses us almost completely, and I've been feeling like that for a couple of days now. As the professional weather talking heads yammer on and on about heavy rains and flooding here because of Ike, I shake my head and say "Oh, no it isn't! Not here!" I tend to think you and I are right and they are wrong. The more the storm trends eastward near the coast, the more I see our chances of rain dwindling quickly. Having said that, I still think the Texas Gulf Coast is in for a really awful time.....and I woldn't want the rainfall or surge they're about to get. I was thinking about all the gardeners in the path of Ike. Just imagine how devastated their gardens, landscapes & agricultural/horticultural enterprises will be! Dawn

Dee, I hope I can reassure you. Here in PSL we are VERY fortunate and things ARE improving. There is still some standing water but for the most part it's receding. Only a few roads are left blocked, most businesses are back up and running, and it's back to life as usual. If you want to send me a message through my page with the area she lives in or some nearby cross-streets, I can let you know how it's faring, if you like. A little north of us, on the other hand, is probably far worse off. I heard that Melbourne/Palm Bay got TWENTY SIX inches of rain - and a twister. I've kept ya'll in my prayers and I'm glad to see a few of you reporting in. april

Thanks, Glenda. We need the rain. Eastern and southeastern needs it more so I hope the storm swings eastward a bit more and gives them the moisture they need. In a year like this, every drop that falls is precious.

I am sorry your deluge of rain carried off the turnip seed. Why does it always rain at the wrong times?

We were walking out on the field of the campus yesterday and the cracks in the dirt were huge. Almost big enough to catch your foot in. Not quite :), but almost. We need some serious rain.

I don't think OKC has to worry because they're saying you'll get a lot of rain. So, relax, and enjoy the rainfall. Well, enjoy it until the flooding starts and then remember 'you asked for it'. lol

I'm just worried about the parts of eastern and northeastern OK who have incredibly high Keetch Byram Drought Index numbers....those with numbers in the 600s and 700s.

Before last week's rains, we were in the 600s here and now we're in the lower 500s. That might not sound like much of a difference, but in terms of soil moisture it is a huge difference.

Check out the linked soil moisture map to see who's hurtin' for moisture and who's a little better off. If life were fair, the folks with an FWI of 0.0, 0.1 and 0.2, etc. would get rain before those of us with an FWI of 0.7 or 0.8 or 0.9. Life, however, is not fair.

It looks like SE Oklahoma is getting some decent rain. Yay!

I am super thrilled we are supposed to get some here in OKC. I hope it's not the flash floods we had earlier, but we could use several inches. My gardens are just barely hanging on, no matter how much water I pour on them.

I need to stop by and get some grass seed on the way home tonight. It sounds like a good chance to get some fescue growing again.

I was just looking at the Mesonet maps a minute ago and some places have had great rainfall. Hugo, which had a KBDI in the upper 600s has had 1.2" so far and Mt. Cloudy, which had a scarey-high KBDI of 744 (800 is no moisture to speak of in the soil at all) has had 2.5" so far. Other areas have had less, but every drop counts.

If you sow that grass seed, I hope you get the perfect amount of water to help it sprout and not so much water that the seed floats away.

It sounds like the cracks in the ground there are worse than here, but then we have had some rain recently.

I hope we get the good stuff (rain, rain, rain) wherever it is needed but also that we get lucky and miss the bad stuff (flooding, Tstorms, tornadoes). Oklahoma has had enough bad weather for one year. I think we deserve some nice, peaceful rain with no complications.

Yeah, we're getting a good soaking here. Just what we didn't need (personally). They were supposed to pick up the moving trailers yesterday but, with the steady rain saturating the top layer of clay, they can't make it up the slip 'n slide that is our driveway. Looks like we'll be stuck here until at least Monday now.
