Should I cut a large cutting into smaller ones?

Someone gave me two branches off a plumeria tree, one is about four feet tall with three smaller branches on it about two feet long, and one is about three feet long with two smaller branches about 18 inches long on it. Would it be better to cut the smaller branches off into five small cutting and use five one gallon pots, or should I keep the large branches intact and plant them in maybe five gallon buckets. If I cut them up should I throw away the main branches that I cut the tips off or should I try to plant that too?

I often root very large cuttings in a cut off Trader Joes 1.5L water bottle with holes in the bottom. This year I am trying a small bag made from cheese cloth filled with soil and tied around the stem. I like to see the roots and not have to deal with large cuttings blowing over. Large pots are hard to start in because they hold too much moisture. Also if you do cut, you can start all of the plant. Just make sure to plant it upright and not upside down. The old leaf scars will smile if correct and frown if wrong. Large cuttings and big stems take longer to root but you end up with a bigger plant sooner.

I would leave the cutting as is. Larger cuttings usually root better than the smaller ones. So leave it whole and you will have a nice bush this season. Good Luck

NO. Let it grow. The important thing right now to to encourage growth and get the tree bigger. You can always prune for shape later. Doing so now might possibly shock the tree, or allow disease into the open wound, and will gain nothing. The second shoot, since it below the soil line, will probably develop roots, if left alone, and will be easy to start a new tree from is removed next spring. If you want a bush shape tree, then just leave it as is.

Thanks for the input all. It's been very helpful to hear various viewpoints. General opinion of the tree experts is that this is looking like an all-or nothing deal. The trees are so close that they have become dependent on each other for protection. If we do move forward, we may try to only take down some of the trees but we would need to be mentally (and financially) prepared to accept that the rest would have to come down shortly after. Re the light: It's not really a matter of light in a single room. The trees keep almost the entire house and yard in the shade; to the extent that the lawn grows mushrooms quite effectively. As a next step, we are going to mock-up what we would put in the place of these trees since it will be a major change.

If you are planting it in a hill with 6ft or around it. slip it out of the pot and plant it. When it has recovered from transplant shock, select the two most vigorous plants and snip off the others.
