Oops! left my cutting out in the rain! help!

Hi, I have a plumeria cutting, about 3 ft. piece that i got at a flea market in Fla. I've put it in a pot and have had it inside for about 4 wks now, no leaves. Maybe not enough direct sun? I put it outside since it was going to be a very warm few days, and i forgot to bring it under cover when it rained! will it rot now?

I dont think the rain should be a problem, but keep it warm and definitely dont water it until it has growth comming up. It might be as long as a month or 2 before leaves begin to appear (or at least thats how long it takes my cuttings).

agree with tropicalzone7. a little rain usually does not cause problems during rootiing.

If you don't have anywhere outdoors to plant them now (and not enough containers), what to you expect to do with them in spring? Spring blooming bulbs should be planted now. Planting them in spring is working at cross purposes, as well as the longer your store them out of the ground/unplanted, the more likely they are to deteriorate. They do not store overwinter very well unless you offer rather special conditions - cool, dark and dry. Too warm, bright or humid and they will attempt to sprout. Too dry and they desiccate. Neither is a good thing. If you can't plant them now, give to someone who can.

You've made some inadvertent compost tea. I don't know about diluting it. The rest of the compost should still have plenty of nutrients for other plants. Compost isn't as complicated and fragile as its sometimes made out to be. :-D

I think the main impact that rain has on butterflies is in influencing how much (or little) the host plants grow. The immediate impact is that the butterflies stay perched in the trees and shrubbery while it's raining. I heard they got huge rain totals in the Florida panhandle. I got .55 on the 3rd and .50 yesterday, so my totals have been modest, but helpful - we haven't had rain in a while, and I was having to water my garden, such a pain having to deal with that unwieldy hose! It's supposed to rain every day this weekend, though, and probably all through next week, so I shouldn't have to deal with it for a while, anyway. Sherry

Hi there, I agree with Barbra that it's a bit tricky to root them in the summer. When cuttings are cut early spring, the mother trees are still dormant. As it's time for them to naturally wake up, they'll grow leaves and start rooting so that's why it's a lot easy to root them in the spring. This is from personal experience and what a JL farms' rep told me. They had a cutting cut in the fall/early winter and by early summer, it still hasn't rooted. But another cutting cut from the same tree in Feb has rooted by May. With that said, it's not impossible to root in the summer. For your cutting, I'd keep it away from the extreme heat. When temp gets over 90, I protect mine from the afternoon sun. I'd like to root them in bottles so I can see when roots are formed. Also with a bottle, there's less soil (less moisture retention if it rains). Since my mix is fast draining, it doesn't matter if they get rained on every once in a while. But I wouldn't recommend letting them soak in the rain every day. :) Kenny

There was something written a while back about watering cuttings and rain water. Supposedly rain water is ok, actually a benefit so I would not worry. Just do not water the cutting with tap water. Again rain water is suppose to be good for your cutting.

I did that last night I live in chicago and it is in the upper seventies low 80's. I left out my cutting that I am trying to root and I left out my year old already rooted plant. Will this kill them? Should I repot them. They got a bit of rain? I havent watered them in a week but I am afraid the soil is too wet now. They are in a cactus soil which seems to be ok for draining. HELP!!!

leave rooting plants alone. Constant messing causes problems.
