Bill I saw this message on another site that I post on and casted my vote for Sherry's class. That's a great project. Hopefully the love of science will stay with those kids long after they have left her class. You'll have to post the results. Good luck Sherry.

Karyn- I can say that Sherry"s kids leave class as little scientists. Sherry moved from being a multi-award winning math teacher to kinder so she could start a passion for math and science at an earlier age. This was her room the week the kids studied the sea and then took their sherry made species id cards and went to discover the wonders of the tidepool. A picture says much, Bill

Wow! that's inspired me to do fun things with my kids. Her kids are so blessed to have such a wonderful teacher like her. I bet they will be sad when the class comes to an end.

Thank you to all who have voted but plumeriastix you can sadly only vote once. Also thanks to all who recognize the massive effort sherry puts into teaching every day. I think the most important part of this contest is the possibility that other early grade teachers will see the value of driving a curriculum with math and science and head it that direction. Inspiration, enthusiasm, and interest needs to be fostered from pre-K to grade 6 or you are swimming upstream. Thanks again. Bill

Jerri- I gave you a link to Sherry's blog. As far as the habitat goes i am not sure which one. We have pop up habitats used for the butterflies to eclose and to hold them for several days until they become sexually developed so they can be released. Part of our yard is a habitat and we built one at my wifes school and at my former school which consist of nectar plants (buddleas, mexican flame vine, lantana, salvia, etc.) and host plants (where eggs are deposited) which are specific to each butterfly (citrus for giant swallowtails, milkweed for monarchs, fennel for anise swallowtails, specific passionvines for gulf fritilarys, etc.) Sherry is also working on information on how to raise from egg to adult for a harvest and release program which increases the survival rate by over 90%. I have a poor picture from her classroom of a pop-up with about 15 monarchs which were released today and are cruising our neighborhood. We release in Huntington City Park, in our yard and in Fullerton Arboritum (where we rescued some catpits for them because their milkweed froze during the Calif freeze and the catpits had nothing to eat. Very interesting blog Bill, thank you so much for posting it. I actually learned alot. I had no idea what caterpillar poop was called, LOL! I';ve got my fingers crossed for her to win, she is very passionate about the butterflies. I think it's great, I can't remember the last time I actually saw one...

Jerri- sidenote: If you saw the movie Sideways you would note that one of the wineries they visited was called Frass Canyon (Caterpillar poop Canyon) which showed the writers had a sense of humor. Thanks for your support. Bill
