How do I deter snails naturally without harming banana slugs?
Comments (7)Copper tape is a thin strip of copper either by itself or on a mylar backing. There is something about copper oxide that snails detest. I don't think it kills them but they avoid contact with it. If you circle your garden with it snails will not cross it to get into your garden unless part of it gets covered with dirt. Probably the banana slugs will also avoid it so they will be penned inside it if they are already there. God bless you for having the good sense and heart to avoid harming something that does you no harm....See MorePlease share your tips on getting rid of Slugs and Snails
Comments (23)Hi Cora! Yes, a 10% ammonia solution in a spray bottle is by far the easiest to kill slugs on sight without damaging your plants or soil. (You should not use a salt shaker.) Just take any old spray bottle and put in 9 parts water, 1 part household ammonia (non-sudsing kind, if you have it). You may read about stronger solutions (more ammonia), but it is not necessary. Since you will be spraying the slugs as you see them, you will also see that a 10% solution works. Have fun! Carol...See MoreHow to get rid of slugs on iris tubers
Comments (1)Giving the rhizomes a soak won't prevent future slugs. It's hand-picking or poison. This may sound gross but it's highly effective. I do a flashlight search and squish the found slugs on the closest hard surface (if none is, place a brick beside the plant). Then I sprinkle the squished body/ies with snail poison if I'm lazy or if out of Snarol, I go out an hour later and squish all who have come to dine....See MoreHow many slugs/snails do I have to kill?
Comments (4)I live in the Cascade foothills in the Columbia River Gorge, and have killed upwards of 500 large slugs in the yard portion of the property this year, and have not had anywhere near that number for several years previous. And that's just the "morning murders" as my husband calls them. I haven't ventured out at night yet, but I'm seeing a lot more slugs out and about this year. Have you brought in topsoil, mulch, plants, anything like that? Also, you might want to check out the life cycle of a slug - they have lots of babies! I had to pick off many dozens of bitty slugs from my echinacea a few weeks back. (I didn't count those in my death toll!) Best of luck. The most effective way to really make a dent is to go out at night with a bucket of soapy water and a pair of nitrile gloves. Pick and drop, pick and drop. YOu'll be amazed. The slug baits are for the most part very eco-unfriendly, so beware. Many kill pets. I have one bait that I resort to in some areas, it's pet-safe and only gets eaten by slugs and snails, but it's not a cure-all....See Morestoneys_fatali
