Washington, DC palms & bananas

I work in downtown Washington, DC so after work one day last week I walked around the Smithsonian museums snapping some photos. The Smithsonian's horticultural staff have been planting a lot more palms and tropical plants in recent years. Most are in pots or as temporary in-ground plantings but there is a bed near the Air & Space Museum where several hardy palms & bananas were planted a few years ago--around 2000 or 2001 (I would have to check my notes for the exact date). Here are photos of the bed from a couple of different angles:

The bed has a single Trachycarpus fortunei (windmill palm), several Sabal minors (dwarf palmettos):

and two or three Rhapidophyllum hystrix (needle palms) which unfortunately were planted too close to the fast-growing Musa basjoos so they are getting crowded out:
