Will pepper plants flower and fruit in second year?

Hello,

I planted pepper seeds in containers about a year ago. They grew well, and I got a lot of peppers last summer and fall. They were initally outdoors, but I brought them indoors because we had an early cold and the fruit wasn't ready for harvest yet. since the plants looked healthy, I kept them alive through the winter.

Will they fruit again this year? Is there something I need to do (prune them?) to get them to flower and fruit again?

Peppers are perennials, so if you kept them alive this long, they will start to flower again when season progresses. You can prune them a bit and even change some of the soil, like with house plants. I have a Green Leaf Tabasco which is staring its third season and some second season Rocotos and a Tepin. Last year I added some earth worm castings on the top of the soil of my overwintered peppers and they seemed to like it.

This is a 9-yr old purira bearing fruit continuously. Grown in a greenhouse.

All chiles are perennial.

The condition is called 'blossom drop' and I linked the FAQ on it below. It covers the basic of the issue but you can also find out much more about it - probably more than you'd care to know :) using 'blossom drop' as a serch term here or or Google. Dan mentioned some of the causes - weather and inconsistent soil mositure. The pollen is only viable within a specific air temperature range and % of humidity. Without doing a soil test, you won't know if you have to my Nitrogen. A way to make plants seed/fruit is to stress them. My neighbor stressed her plants with the lack of water and they went to fruit. All the fruit were small, but there are reasons behind it. She didn't mean to stress them but when you plant with a larger of cardboard and a few inches of top soil on top, you have to water non-stop. She missed a day and everything started to wilt. When she got back to watering, within a couple days, everything had flowers on it and started to fruit. As to the reason her peppers and such are small is because she really needs to water twice a day, and she still misses some days. Good luck in getting your plants to fruit... BTW, here plants went to fruit within a couple weeks from planting. I planted a week or more before her, and mine didn't start to fruit for a good 3 or 4 weeks after her's. I've got 3 or 4 peppers per plant now and have picked a couple of good sized greens already.. Basically I could pick a full sized bell pepper ever few days and have plenty.

Though you do not indicate your Hardiness Zone or in which part of the country you live, I believe it's time to plant your tomatoes and peppers in the garden, stop debudding them and let them do their thing. Most varieties of peppers grow to more than 2 feet and tomatoes can grow to over 6 feet, depending on what type they are and the length of your growing season. I planted mine Victoria Day weekend which is our last frost date in Zone 5, and some of the tomato and pepper plants I purchased already have flowers and are only about 8 inches high.

Thanks, floral_uk. That is a beautiful photo of Hollyhock. About a year ago I fell in love with Delphinium and planted a lot of Delphinium and joined the Delphinium Society. Now I seem to be falling in love with Hollyhock and will be planting a lot of them soon. There's something about that tall, elegant, majestic look that really moves me. If Delphinium is the queen of the garden, Hollyhock is at least her beautiful sister and confidante. And for me here in New England probably easier to grow given our hot and humid summers.

The most Ive gotten out of a plant was 4 years from a thai hot ornamental, and shame on me for getting bored and wanting to use its hydroponic apparatus (waterfarm) for something else.

Currently, my rocoto red is on her third year. Up here in zone 5 they need to be at least a year old before they'll produce much anyway.

My JalabaÃ±ero plant is already wanting to make flowers. and it only has a few leaves right now..... Not even back in the sun yet either

Second year plants seem to always produce really well. It's third year and older plants that I am often disappointed in. There are people that know how to properly prune and cut back when needed that do very well with them. Unfortunately, something I haven't mastered.

My five year old Red Rocoto was hardly worth the effort. Just a handful of pods and it had a wingspan of well over 10 feet.

We had Thai, Malagueta and Chiltecpin plants do well after overwintering inside. The plants were smaller but very healthy and produced lots of fruit. Just prune back any dead branches and change some of the soil, mix it up a little. Also-chiles hate cold feet, so wait as long as you can to set them back outside.
