Wish I could find trash like that on the curb! :)

Personally, if it were mine, I would do nothing at this point but let the one branch grow. I might would stake it to grow upward. Then next year I would determine what I wanted to do.

A 15-gallon pot is likely to be 18" across & nearly as high. If concerned about water stains from a pot standing on deck or balcony, you might pick up pot feet as an alternative to a wheeled dolley. They fit under the bottom rim to raise the pot, run a couple of dollars each & you'd need four for a pot that size. Usually found with the pots outside, as they also keep a pot from freezing to a bottom surface & cracking. Often use them & just slide a saucer beneath for water to drain to which can be emptied & removed in between waterings. Might consider using a few inches of mulch atop the soil to keep it cooler & delay moisture evaporation (kept from touching the stems) & pine straw for that is fine. Also keeps soil from splashing out in watering or rain. The potting mix you used contains slow-release fertilizer, but as others have noted, you'll need quick-release fertilizer for pots as well. The rule of thumb is "weakly, weekly" meaning fertilizer diluted in water at 1/4 the concentration on the bottle for monthly feeding, given weekly by pouring on soil already moist. Some of the fertilizers are very salty & can build up a residue on top of the soil & interior of the pot. Prefer fish emulsion myself. What a romantic gesture from your boyfriend! Are you sure it was an attack and not fin rot? Those block type feeders have a bad reputation for killing the bio-filter. Minimally they can create a bad algae problem or whack out pH. I would check water parameters to be sure. Are the day-glow tetras the kind that have color injection or are they glo-lights, or head and tail light (I always get them mixed up)? Anyway, the color injected ones don't last long to begin with because of the artificial coloring process. More recently I bought a battery operated auto feeder from wally world for about $10. It works great. I only have flake food in it but my fish will eat anything. If you use one of these I reccomend getting 2 weeks before your vacation so you can make sure it works properly and you have the correct setting. I have left my fish over a week before with no feedings and never had any attacks. Not all circumstances are the same but, more often then not those feeders end up being the cause.

I have a resident groundhog every year. Do you have a dog? Walk your dog around the area once a day so the groundhog gets its scent (be careful, groundhogs can do damage to dogs) or scoop up dog poo and place it right at the entrance of the groundhog's burrow. He'll hate that! Or if you have a cat, dump the litter box there. Try to make his life miserable so he'll move on. I'd tell you to block up the burrow entrance but he probably has one or even two exits somewhere. A live trap will work if you bate it, but then you have the concern of where to take him after he's caught. Some say it's more cruel than shooting to dump the groundhog in a strange place where he doesn't know where to find food and water.

No need to get nasty. I've been away from the computer, and up until then have answered questions. Here's the end of the story, and after that I won't check the follow-ups because I don't need people to be nasty to me because they think that's OK on the internet. I'll be writing a small check to the neighbor. And another one next month, and one after that until I'm done paying for half. (because I really don't have the money.) I've decided to go ahead an pay them, and not because I was hiding anything before, but because when the fence came down yesterday I found out that the situation was different. They are replacing twice as much fence as I thought, which means the price is fair. And one of the posts does need to be replaced now that I can see it (the one they hung their heavy homemade gate from.) If you really need to know how many pickets needed to be replaced: 8 pickets (too close to their sprinkler.) And one post (that I didn't know about). On 120 feet of fence. And yes, the neighbor has as many sports cars as I have kids(3). And yes, they were shocked that I couldn't just write them a check for $800 on the spot. Because they're like that. I'll get them the money because the fence is on the property line, and the price is fair, even if I believe we could have waited a few more years. I was initially reluctant to pay because I thought they were cheating me in addition to being rude. But I am going to ask for a receipt.

I would cut it below the first joint so it can make new branches and look better. Wipe the cut with a paper towel wetted with alcohol and coat woth LET.

it sounds like a good idea to me to cut below the joint. The top of that plant is not worth saving in my opinion. What is "LET" ? Maybe I should know this but its not coming to me.

It doesnt look strong enough to have made itself root bound. I would repot to get it into a fast draining soil you are comfortable working with and know the characteristics. While you are in there I would want to look at the root ball and see if its developed.

I agree.. Cut it and seal... Check the roots and see if they are healthy. Repot like K mentioned and let it grow new stems from under the cut. You will probably see buds in a month or so.

LET is Liquid Electrical Tape. Works great for sealing cut ends to prevent rot. Anecdotal evidence suggests that it may even promote branching below the cut.

Here is a center cut I am rooting. The top is sealed with LET and there are 4 leaf nodes sprouting branches.

Fred, I agree it would look best in the future if you just cut all that forking off. Just leave the thick trunk and it will sprout new branches that (hopefully) will be more even than what's growing from the current damaged three branches.

Del, thanks for the info on LET--sounds like anyone with more than three plumerias should have it in their tool box!
