Where can I possibly purchase a trachycarpus wagnerianus? It seems like they are no where to be found online to buy.

Michael you are still good for a laugh ... as I look at the gothic roll call intro from a monty python slant ... "bring out the dead" would be my chant as I make my rounds with my wagon and my bell clanging ... they will not come back ... and besides the new are vibrant and exciting group thirsting for knowledge and shared experiences .. the valued and noble others have gone on to origami.

Wow...now that usually happens here! Instead, all the snow has melted in the back of the yard where the raised veggie bed is. I actually prepped it and put some fencing over it to keep the animals out. Minus adding a bit of leaf mulch and manure, the bed is ready to plant in. Just take heart knowing that you're closer to the days of "no snow" than you were. Linda

Thanks for the info and offers, everyone-- I used to see this green arboricola for sale everywhere, but this season it seems that only the variegated stuff is out there. Maybe the colorful stuff was found to be more popular here in Naples. I wonder if philodendron selloum would be a nice substitute-- still tropical looking, a similar green color... I might try this if I don't find the arboricola around.

By 1875 there would likely have been solid fuel (probably coal rather than wood) burning stoves rather than the, by then, old-fashioned fire places. This would be particularly true in western PA where coal was plentiful and where access to cast iron stoves would have been cheap and easy through canals or the Great Lakes. My northern NY house built before the Civil War never had a single fireplace, only stoves for both heating and cooking. The earliest stoves were wood-burning; then there was a coal phase, but by time we bought it in the 1980s all the heating and cooking had gone back to wood burners. With stoves you need only chimney stacks not the massive masonry that a fireplace needs, so you may not find large voids where hearths were. Keep an eye out for circular marks on walls about the size of gallon paint can lid. These are evidence of stove pipe thimbles as they passed through walls. If you can get up on the roof, you may be able to detect places where chimneys have been removed to below the roof surface. Look in the attic for circular holes in the attic flooring. It was quite common to have long (by modern safety standards) runs of nearly horizontal stove pipe from one room to another to get the chimney. If your willing to drive 400 miles for it Pungo palms in virginia beach has them. Thats where I got mine last year.

I noticed a lot less palm offerings on Ebay than in past years. I don't know why. The economy? Freezes in the deep South the past couple of winters? Just a fad that ran its course for many people? Availability of "blue pot" palms in many states at Home Depot, K-mart, Lowes?

I know a guy in Mass that has palms for sale-
if you don't mind driving there-not sure how many smaller ones he has though-let me know.

I just don't understand why they don't sell them in vast amounts and sizes here in the U.S.. In Europe they sell them in all shapes and sizes. This sux

It's a choice of economics. Pure Trachycarpus wagnerianus is very slow to gain height unlike Trachycarpus fortunei or T. wagnerianus x fortunei. In about four years of potting up, fertilizing, and watering, I can have four foot tall fortunei, three foot tall wagnerianus x fortunei or one gallon, 16 inch tall Trachycarpus wagnerianus.

I purchased mine several years ago from eBay along with a latifolius, and martianus. Only recently planted the waggie in the ground in an island planting of hemlocks. It is rather slow growing I have to say. I see fortunei being sold in those blue pots--but never waggies. EBay is hit or miss, try again at some future point.
