No idea, but I had something similar with some datil/one of my 7 pods that got sunburned while the other 140+ plants had nothing at all wrong with them after.

My ghosts were fine so I wouldn't think it's characteristic. The thing I noticed however was... the plants that were affected had fairly new leaves out. Were your ghosts just getting some new growth by any chance? I only ask that because that's what I think happened with the couple of mine.

They are pulling through it pretty well however and mine have new leaves setting and such. So i think maybe limit it to an hour or so at first then gradually increase. Some people say not to harden off till you are going to put them out, but I don't know, as nice of days as we've had lately. (Not to mention it seems like the plants explode in growth after getting some air, and full sun for a few.)

DMForcier: I imagine that different varieties are more susceptible to sunburn than others. But what I do know is that "6 hours of direct sun yesterday, and again for today" is way too much unless they have been previously exposed to direct sun. Also, it may just take a little longer for the signs of sunburn to show on some of the other plants. What I noticed the year where I sunburned some plants is that it seemed to affect the older leaves much more than the newest growth. But, in the end, they all came through it with little lasting affect.

Yeah, they've been out briefly before and the window the grow lights are in gets 1-2 hours of sun a day. I was more concerned about the wind than the sun and I did have to pull the tall Twilight and Lemon Drop in because of it.

Checking at noon today, the little guys all seem very happy and one large Alma showed possible sunburn on a cotyledon, as did one of the smaller Twilights. Nothing to be concerned about in my book.

AB, the growth was affected roughly uniformly, with more damage to the older growth if anything. Perhaps a pic is in order.

Oddly, the little Bhuts are acting as though they're on a cruise. Go figure.

Yeah, older growth should be affected more by sunburn. The problem is that leaves that grow in low light conditions don't harden up (their cell walls aren't as thick as normal), which means they take extra damage from strong sunlight. Fresh growth is still in the process of growing, and can thicken up it's cell walls much faster.

All in all, as long as they aren't very new seedlings that have been burnt to a crisp, you should be fine. At most what you'll get is complete leaf drop of the old growth and that will help prompt vigorous new regrowth (much like pruning).

I didn't really bother hardening my overwintered peppers back off this year. I put them out in the day and brought them in when it was cold, then put them in the bed a few days ago. They're getting some sunburn, the wind is blowing leaves off, all stuff I expected to happen. Won't kill them though, so I'm not worried. It takes a *LOT* of damage to kill even a half way mature pepper plant.

Okay, here's some pics. The Alma is lower right. It developed similar symptoms to the bhuts after an additional day in the sun. The bhuts have greened up a bit since they've been back under the lights.

Again, none of the other plants have these symptoms.

Now, I note that the four peppers pictured above are all in the same type of pot, leading me to speculate that they were potted at the same time. (I don't keep records of re-potting dates.)

Everything I have repotted has drawn from the same batch of 5:1:1, but maybe something (cat piss?, excess lime?) got in the batch before these were done (if in fact they were all done together).

Yup, thats sunburn alright.

Well, I sure wish I could figure out why these got blasted while the other 60 plants as just happy as clams.

Maybe I should start using a higher SPF...
