Iguana-proofing my trees...if that's possible...

Happy Saturday, all:

Laura had asked for photos of more of my trees, and I thought this would be an opportunity to share a few more.

After an iguana basically tore off one of the tips of my dockside trees, I decided something had to be done...so today, I began the process of attempting to iguana-proof my plumies with bird-netting and garden mesh. Who knows if it will work, but I had to try.

So, here are a few more of my trees, under the veil of bird-netting! These are all doing very well in the gritty mix, by the way...

Lilikoi (the long tip on the right is the one that the iguana mauled off--grrr! You can also see where the leaves were eaten off the whole way to the stem):

Summer has arrived in South Florida! Yes! The trees are all waking up...inflos on Waimea, Haleakala, Aimhorn, and a pink NoID...still not enough! More inflos, please.

Greg, They all look good with or without bird nets and leaves. Hope the netting works. It would be a shame to loose infloes to them. We work too hard to get those blooms. Your hula girl is really getting pretty. Peg

Thank you, Peg. I agree that it would be more than a shame to lose inflos to those critters. I am an animal lover but I have a hard time finding a warm spot inside for an iguana...and if they break off my flower stalks, I'm definitely going to have to talk to my condo association about a "final solution." *evil laugh*

Or, if cutting and piecing wood to the gaps is too finicky, hardware cloth across the inside should do. However, I echo the sentiments of the poster on your other thread - this is a chicken tractor, and not meant for over-nighting except if inside something that gives secure conditions. It CAN be tipped over, and with no bottom, the inside quarters would be more accessible to any predator. I would look into getting/making a very secure overnight house for your hens, and maybe put hardware cloth across the bottom of the tractor, so nothing can get in if it tips, nor by digging under it. I would get a snap or clip of some kind to put in the hole for the latch. It looks like a lovely day-time house for your hens, and as though, if you move it every few days, as though they will have varied areas to forage in. I would worry about security, though, the more so since you have had one incident with predators already. I HAVE seen housing that looks less secure than that used as permanent housing for hens, next to woods, but I don't know what level of losses are acceptable to the owners, nor if they have, in fact had any. A possible, and less expensive in terms of time, compromise might be to run an electric wire at about 6" above the ground, around the perimeter of the whole tractor at night. 2 wires, one at 6" and one at 18" would be surer, as would using a section of the electro-mesh. You could unhook this and roll it up in the day. If you don't want to set up a charger and wires from the house, one of the small solar chargers would work, but might cost more. You can also get small battery-powered chargers. Few predators will go through an electric fence, esp. if you bait it the first while with bits of aluminum foil wrapped around a wire, smeared with peanut butter - they get a definite shock from that!

Monkey, First, DON"T transplant your gardenia. THey love being root bound in a pot. their roots might look like they are root bound, but they grow slowly, slower than the foliage, so don't do anything to it. When the nights start to get below 40 degrees, bring it in. FInd a room with a bright window. Get one of those things that are round that you can stick under a pot if the water comes thru, I don't know what it is called, sorry. Fill it with stones, cheap stones you can get even at HD or the dollar store, but lots of stones so the pot isn't sitting in the water. When you water it, let some water seep thru the exsisting pot that the gardenia is in now, down thru the stones that the pot is now sitting on top of, and into the big "saucer" type thing . I dont' know what they call those things. I will call it a saucer. The water sitting under the stones will provide some humidity for the plant for the winter. Your bathroom during showers will too. If you have a skylite, you can keep it in the bathroom alot since it will get some light. THose are just a few suggestions for you for the winter. I grow gardenias all the time, outside, and I used to live in PA, so we had long cold winters. I could never get a gardenia to live through a cold long winter in PA. The heater always did them in. Oh, and don't water it very much either in the winter. Make sure it is really dry when you do water it. Good Luck.

And if that just isn't possible, I would suggest trellis and a couple of vines near (not ON) the garage wall, or else follow Pinetree's suggestion and paint a mural on the wall. The arborvitae will sustain root damage, and if they survive that, they will be very restricted. Having plants (of any kind) right next to a building isn't a good idea anyway - you get bugs, mold, mildew and possibly the plants/branches rubbing on or lifting the siding or the roof. Much better to take them out now, when you have eaqsy access to them, rather than having to maneuver around the then tight quarters a few years after the garage is finished. I will grant the remote possibility that the arborvitae may well survive and grow well, but it is pretty remote. And having the construction crew respect the trees just won't happen, what with heavy machinery for grading, fill-dirt dumping and subsequent compaction, as well as cement floor pouring, and putting up the walls next to the arborvitae. You will have a much happier crew if the trees aren't there.

Possible kidney problem - possibly Previcox?

Hi Susan, Here is my experience ... older dog (husky/lab mix), now 12, on Previcox for at least a year for arthritis. Went to the vet in December and he had lost a bunch of weight, Dr did blood work and one of his indicators for kidney or liver function, I forget which now, was out of whack and she was really concerned. I posted about it then. She immediately took him off Previcox, and gave him Tramodol instead. I thought it was the beginning of the end ... This past weekend, we went back and he was re-tested, and all his kidney and liver indicators are back in the normal range, and he's gained most of his weight back. Now I'm not blaming Previcox by any means ... I have changed his diet, he's on better food ... I make sure he's eating, etc, etc ... but I don't think being on Previcox helped. Iguanas, yuck!

Hula Girl is lovely; can't wait to see your other inflos.

How about a garlic/cayenne spray? Teen squirrels were chewing off all my magnolia flower buds (that I waited 9 years to see for the first time!) last spring so I mixed freshly minced garlic with cayenne pepper in water and sprayed my buds with it. Did the trick for quite a while, until rain washed it all off. Smells terrible so I can't imagine iguanas wanting to eat anything sprayed with that. With all the rain you get you could just spray the underside of the leaves and that might be enough.

yuck is right! Every time I see one down there, I just cringe.

Your suggestion is terrific--thank you. I was too busy this weekend to find the time to get netting on all of the trees down there; mixing up this spray will take a fraction of the time, and it just may work.

Thanks for the pictures!!!

I am so sorry to hear of those critters eating at your trees. Yikes!!! Jen has a great idea about the spray. They also make other sprays to keep other animals away. I have another idea. I will email you tomorrow and see what you think. Those cages look like they will work well.

I placed about 60+ trees outside today. Temps will be in the mid 70's all week with the lows only down to the low 50's. I lugged them all outside and my first thought was..."how many times will i do this before i can really leave them out for the year.." LMAO!! I guess this happens to me every season... I get so excited when i see the temps like this. MY trees are loving it!!

I will try yours and Jen's. I have been really busy at the office and haven't really looked at my trees in days, let alone finish iguana-proofing them...so I went down to the dock tonight, and found my Julie Moragne picked clean...

This is what I'm dealing with:

I could just scream...this is the third time this tree has leafed out and then had all of its leaves eaten off.

Anyway, glad to hear that your temps will be warm! Woo-HOO! What a great time of year, right? :) (and if I lived in Va Beach I would do the EXACT same thing you did LOL)

Send me your idea when you get a minute, please!
