Phoenix Robellini help

I need help!! I have a phoenix Robellini that is about 1 and 1/2 feet tall. It is planted in direct sun for about 5 hours a day and I water about once a week. some of the lower leaves are turning black and then greyish white. Is this a result of too much sun? Too much water? Or too little water? Any advice on robellinis would be appreciated.

A photo would be helpful. Not sure that it is over watering. These palms often grow near water, and it is hard to overwater them especially if they are in direct sun.

Did you recently put it out in direct sun from indoors?

have phoenix rubellini in san diego moved them 10 feet in june not alot of sun in san diego in june/ 3 miles from ocean used palm dirt/miracle grow dirt/and mulch and exisisting soil. lots of h2o . leaves getting darker. some roots had to be cut since they were wrapped around sprinkler pipes. to much h2o/shock/ roots cut? any suggestions out their would be appreciated.

It doesn't harm the tree one bit. I do it all of the time. I also have a couple of clumps of Phoenix Roebelenii, and I prune them to keep the overall shape of the fronds somewhat upright (I like to keep the fronds in a 180 degree shape) so whatever frond begins to hang down, I cut off - Green or not.

If it had been kept in shade previously the sudden move out into full sun could be the problem. They need to be hardened up gradually. Also overhead watering if your in a cooler climate. That does promote crown rot, and that results in spear pull.Check if the newer fronds will come out with a gentle pull.

Thanks Mike. Yes, both palms were in direct sun for most of the day, all summer. They were watered whenever it rained and then about every 3 days or so with grass watering. The soil in both of them is what they came in with, 1 and 2 years ago. Any suggestions as to soil mixture? I will repot them (same containers?) before I send them to my son's Middle School greenhouse. Watering protical in a greenhouse setting? Top couple of inches get dry, soak it? and my last concern for greenhouse keeping. Fretilizing, palm spraying? Good, bad and what best to use if it is done? I really want them to thrive over the winter. Thanks, jim

I am also having the same problems. My palms take roughly 5-6 hours of direct sunlight and are watered 2 to 3 times a week, my plants appear light yellow and do not look healthy. I could also use some help...
