rust on hollyhocks

Out in the garden today I noticed the leaves of my hollyhocks (all singles) are full of little yellow dots. After doing a google image search I'm pretty certain this is alcea rust. Right now the plants have buds but haven't yet flowered. Not sure when I should expect them to flower in my zone. My question is: does the rust affect the blooms? Is it possible they will bloom despite the rust? Can I wait and see or must I cut them all down right now? I have about six plants and they are all infected. Any advice would be appreciated. I'm heartbroken--having started these as seedlings last year--I was so looking forward to finally seeing them bloom!

Doesn't affect the blooms.
Yes, they will bloom in spite of the rust even while the leaves will become more and more spotted.

Don't know about where you live, but around here, hollyhocks and rust are considered a "set" -- that is, if you have hollyhocks, you also have rust.

You can spray. It won't get rid of the lesions you currently see but may minimize continuing disease.

So far this year, I don't have any rust problems. I was asking because a few customers have requested an organic method. Even the chemical sprays we sell did nothing for the rust I had last summer. None of those plants returned so I've still not seen any hollyhock blooms in my garden. Maybe the best method is to just remove the infected plant.

Kay- I always spray my hollyhocks with the rose fungicide to control the hollyhock rust. If I forget and don't get to it early enough in the year I get the same rust spots that you show. If I forget to spray the rust gets really bad. The year before last things go so bad all my hollyhocks died. It is not the same rust as the rust that roses get in dry climates but the same rose fungicides seem to work to control the rust. Not cured though as one needs to keep spraying. I guess it has to do with the weather as some years the hollyhock rust is really bad and other years not a problem.

I have pretty good luck with spraying wettable sulfur on my hollyhocks. No rust so far this year. I spray every two weeks. You should try it and see if it helps. The leaf miners are eating my leaves though so, it's always something.
