Shriveled Plant...should I toss or leave alone?

I have either a dark pink or a Japanese Lantern (where I bought it wasn't exactly sure of the variety) I got at the end of last summer. I put it in the ground and it had been flowering then. It dropped all its leaves for the winter and upon closer inspection seems to be shriveling and softening (except for the bottom "trunk"...for lack of a better word) which is still relatively firm. Should I cut it back to the firm part, or leave it alone and see what happens? The tips were not shiny, and the claws that had been developing seem to have stopped and blackened. Help!

Mahalo,

Mark
