This has been discussed lots more recently than a decade ago. Indeed, urine is an excellent source of nitrogen, but be careful about dilution to prevent burn. Also, and this is important, don't use old urine. I knew a guy who peed in a pail and, months later, he'd pour it on his plants, expecting miracles. That doesn't work. The urease that is floating around degrades the urea in it pretty quickly. That's where you get the ammonia smell from urine. That smell is nitrogen that isn't going to end up on your plants. By the way, this isn't a revolutionary discovery. There is a long history of recycling of human urine as fertilizer.

Not at all... it means that is IS healthy! :) Those seeds will get bigger, turn orange, and then start to fall off.

I currently use urea/potassium chloride/ triple super phosphate/ferrous sulfate which I buy in bulk and mix for price savings, but previously I used Lesco 24-0-11 from HD (it's a 50# bag for about $35 and has 3% iron) and also Scotts Green Max. They're about 50% fast release, 50% slow release which works great. The Lesco starter is top notch as well. I would recommend that you use iron for enhanced color, either as part of the fertilizer mix like the Lesco or as a supplemental application in the form of Ironite or ferrous sulfate if you can find it.

lol .. since we have frost or freeze potential thru the end of may .. i frankly have no answer to fertilizing in APRIL ... lol ... my base answer is.. bare root it.. and then it doesnt matter what it is.. or any other question ... regardless of the type of plant.. i NEVER fert at transplant.. as at that point its stressed.. not hungry ... it has always been my idea ... for what that is worth ... that hosta emerge on stored energy .. so very early fert'g isnt a big deal ... having it there for summer use.. sounds ok to me ... i struggled using professional level theory in my garden .. with a profit motive they do things to speed growth.. for sale that season .. and if they lose a certain percent of say.. 100 plants ... so be it.. it a CODB .... cost of doing business ... i seemed to lose a higher percent.. and having only one of one... it was a total loss ... sometimes you just refine the cost benefit ratio down to .. whats your hurry ... and why increase loss potential ... for a little instant gratification ... boy sounds like a business school paper.. lol ... ken
