Overwatering. The top layer of the soil should dry since it is directly exposed to the air. The underneath soil is likely still soaked. Take a toothpick, stick it into the soil and let it set for several minutes at least. Then carefully pull it out. If it comes out wet, with soil particles stuck to it, then the soil is still wet underneath. After a while you will get a good feel for how wet the soil is.

Yellowing is a common sign of overwatering. Also, make sure your lights are within about one inch of the top of the seedlings and that you are using "daylight" or 6500K bulbs.

When you do all that, I think your seedlings will take off. If everything is going correctly, at one month, you should definitely have at least one set of true leaves on most of your plants...even two or three sets.

If your soil didn't have any nutrients to start, you could add a very little right now. Add about half of what the directions call for. Over fertilizing is another common problem though.

Thanks for your suggestions, Bruce! I'll have to look at the spectrum on my lights. They are sold as plant and aquarium lights.

Also, I have the light maybe 2 inches away or so. I'll lower it a little.

Besides the possible overwatering, if the seeds just sprouted they may be yellow especially if it was while the lights were off. A few hours under the lights they should open up and start turing green. I would swap one of the lighs to cool white or daylight.

Good idea habjolokia. I run two plant/aquarium bulbs out of the six in my shop lights. The other 4 are 6500K daylight bulbs. I think the theory is that the higher spectrum is the most crucial but that plants can use and even desire some of the lower spectrum light as well.

Thanks Bruce, I find the plants enjoy the mix. Greenman can you put the science to lights and the mixing of bulbs to spectrum, still waiting on the idea of the 5-1-1 mix working towards that may start next season 1/2 with the tried and true for me then 1/2 the mix. Sorry don't want to get too far off topic.

Wow, I guess I'm just lazy lucky with my starts. I've been doing 12/12 on/off under bargain bin home depot florescence lights for the past four years (same bulbs). At the point where they start overgrowing each other I space them out and move them under 400 watt HID MH lights on a 14/10 schedule.

Here are the latest bunch now heading under bigger lights:

Crunchy409, I agree that over watering is probably your issue. The plants in the picture were yellowing a couple of weeks ago due to my over watering them. I cut back and they're fine now.

If you have doubt about which lights are best for the plants, the easiest way is to simply let the plants tell you. Put a test plant out by itself, and put one light on either side of it so you make a line out of light A - plant - light B. Then turn them both on and wait a day or two. The plant will start to lean towards one light or the other if there is a real difference in quality. Whichever one it points to, thats the one you should be using.

Edymnion, you take all the fun out of growing peppers. You keep this up and no one will have any reason to argue about grow lights on this forum. Next you will try to tell us you can grow Numex Halloween peppers with no heat.
