Well, I'm not an expert on plumeria yet, but since no one else has posted, I'll offer up my opinion.

I've had mine get a bit of freeze damage at the tips as well. Once threat of frost is gone, I've trimmed off the damaged parts down to where I can find fresh healthy plant. In my opinion, better to take off a little more than necessary than to risk any of the frozen bits rotting and further damaging the plant. Just make sure to sterilize your clippers.

I've never used any "caulking" to seal up a cut. Plumeria release a pretty caustic milk at the cut, and I've not had a problem. If you're worried about fungal issues, use an anti-fungal powder (rooting hormone powder contains an anti-fungal and can be used in a pinch). Otherwise I imagine if you do the cuts on a warm clear day, they should sufficiently scab over on their own.

coke nut- I cut the end down to green wood, let dry for several hours to a day, and then cover with DAP cedar tan colored acrylic latex caulk plus silicone (Alex Plus) which comes in caulking gun tubes at Home Depot or like stores. I have used pruning tar, water-based tan paint, household spackle, and tub and tile sealant which all work but the DAP works the best and looks the best, and it stretches as the plant grows so it does not need to be redone for several years. You can do nothing, but the wound will eventually split and crack as the plant grows and will take in water and bugs which are not great for the plan's long term health. I have even used the DAP on large cracks in the stems caused by the freeze several years ago but this needs to be touched up annually. Oh, the DAP has mildew and mold resistant chemicals and is waterproof. I just bought six tubes so I can touch up and cover cuts from my cuttings and will be pumping it out this weekend.

Im in a very tropical zone of Florida and have never used any sealant. Prefer to rip rather than cut also. Just what I do in my area. No expert tho!

Thanks lovefrangis. Ripping it sounds more natural. I guess in the natural setting there wouldn't be any sealant either.

If you just leave the damage tips alone they will dry up on their own. Come summer you will notice that they will dry up and start to detach at the point where the branch healed over and detached. If the dried portion does not detach on its on you can just usually lightly snap it off.
The benefit of letting it heal and dry on its own is that the there will be a natural point were the plant heals and separates and sends out new tips. The other is esthetically it will look nicer, just like when and inflo dries up and falls off or detaches on its own.
My tips that had some damage a couple of years ago in the big frost in So Cal look like there had been inflos that dried up and detached. If I would have cut the damaged tips than it would look like a center cut, more mechanical.

Some people may say that you run the risk of rot or traveling rot. In my case I did not find this to be an issue and ended up with a prettier looking plant, not so chopped up looking.

Last year I had extensive damage from the freeze in FL. I decided to trim some tips that were damaged down to clear wood and leave others alone on one of the plants, a celadine. Last summer, the branches with the cut tips developed new branches near the cut. The branches I left alone also developed new branches at varying distances from the tip depending on the severity of the damage. Both branches grew well last summer and developed inflos on some of the new branches. From my experience, you can either cut or not. I would caution that I watched the damaged branches for any signs of rot. If any appeared, I was going to cut the branch back to clear wood.

I do like to use latex caulk to seal cut ends just to minimize the chance of water getting in a causing rot.

Ok. So much good advise. I have't done anything yet. I'm still thinking about what it would do in it's natural setting.

Lots of good, and diverse, advise here. One thing to remember, is that plants do die in nature. I am not saying that doing nothing will cause your plant to die, or that the advise to do so is bad... only that, in our gardens, we have the ability to help nature do its thing... we can save a plant from disease, or death, that in nature, would not be saved. Allowing nature to take its course, is not always the best thing for our precious plants. I'm just saying!

After you cut, you can seal the end of the branch with candle wax.

Also, it's a good idea to dip your cutting tool into rubbing alcohol after you make every cut.
