Are these rostratas?

Well, the pic didn't show up with the HTML. I was looking at the 4th pic of the yuccas by Whisque.

Can someone tell me why so many plants have the dead leaves hanging all the way down? The plants look so much better trimmed, but which way is right?

austin1- I think they are thompson yuccas,I bought one last year and thats what the tag said, but on the internet there are pics of it listed under rostrata,so I dont know.

donvon-the yuccas do look better trimmed,there is no right way but leaving the dead leaves on is natural and what most yuccas look like,

Those "badass" babies are Y. Carnerosana (Faxoniana). You might try one in Iowa, with some minimal protection: these survive and do well, without protection in Santa Fe, NM, at 7,000 feet, Zone 6. The key is fast draining (sandy or loamy soil, kept DRY in winter. If your soil is clay, you could try a raised bed of mostly sand.
Ryan at Collectorpalms.com (sells on ebay) sometimes has a good size specimen at a reasonable price, with low shipping costs. They are very palm-like when the trunks are trimmed/ shaved. Pictures 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and the last one are all this species. Picture 4 is a Y. Rostrata. #8 is a Thompsoniana and 9 is an Elata. I grow these along with cold hardy palms at my place in Southern NM.

Thanks for the info,my cactus bed is full right now(room for a few small ones only)but I will put that one on the list for next year once I see if there is a spot that opens up.I will build a rain cover Nov 1 and provide some heat for their first winter(when lows reach 0F and lower) until cactus are established,enjoyed your pics!

those yuccas are expensive,there is a nursery here that sells em for $50dollars a foot and another nursery that sells them for $250 dollars for a yucca about 3 feet tall.Some of the larger ones sell for $500 dollars,I always wanted one in my yard but they are too expensive.

Desertland Nursery in El Paso has them much cheaper: I have purchased 6 ft+ yuccas there: Y. Thompsoniana for $150 for at least 6 foot height; Y. Carnerosanas for a little more. Of course, you have to figure in today's gas prices!

As a New Mexican with a strong affinity for yuccas, I strongly disagree with the statement that yuccas look better trimmed. Please stop doing this practice! If you can't appreciate a yucca in its natural state don't grow one, seriously. The dead leaves add cold-hardiness and protect the trunk from dessication, something which people from back east and here don't get. Sorry, but I was absolutely disgusted to see my city tax dollars defoliate a nice stretch of yuccas on Eubank Blvd. Rant off.

Can Yuccas live in Zone 6B?

One does NOT have to go to New Mexico to see some "bad-ass" yuccas. There are some magnificent Yucca carnerosana along the Garden State Parkway in southern New Jersey near mile marker 9 in Cape May County (zone 7). The largest has an estimated trunk diameter of 12 to 16 inches and a height of about 6 or 7 feet. They look like palms! They have endured intense cold and heavy sbnow in some winters. They never show any winter damage! They have fairly heavy leaf filifers on them, suggesting that their provenance was probably from the southern portion of their natural range in Mexico! WOW! Look for them on the right side as one drives southbound.

palmfan-- no you dont have to go to New Mexico to see yuccas but its just that they are all over the place, the yucca is to New Mexico as the palm tree is to California.
The yucca plant is also New Mexico's state flower.

As another "New Mexican with a strong affinity for yuccas", I am reminded of a recent thread on the palm site about whether one can/should paint or lightly stain a palm trunk. Some rather strong opinions were stated on that one, and died down once the person posted pics of their stained palm trunk --- all the naysayers seeemed to change their minds! My point being --- it is perfectly ok to trim the trunk of your tree yuccas, even though they do lose some winter protection in a particularly cold year in the northern reaches of their range. However, in Southern NM pruning trunks is widespread withour serious loss, especially Y. Carnerosanas and Rostratas. Some of us like the palm like look it gives. It seems that if you can grow palms in Albuquerque, flattie, I guess some of us can trim the trunks on our yuccas. In matters of taste, there is no dispute, as some wise person once said. I visit this website.It will attract every body. It will grown in a large pot that are inside the unheated greenhouse during the winter. I have some experience with this species, it is not very hardy outside without protection from winter moisture. If grown in a bed that are protected against winter moisture and if the bed is well drained the plant will grow into a very beautiful specimen. Thank you.

Ok, I totally do not get that last post, nor the link attached to it. That poster joined yesterday, and there is a link to a drug treatment/ detox center???? I dont get it at all.

Maybe they are trying to tell us were all palm / yucca addicts? lol! Tell us something we DONT know mmmmkay? haahah.
