hi there rob, i'm just down the road a bit (HWY 80) in hercules, and we've had our queen (which we got at home depot) for at least 6 years and she's been through alot and is doing just fine! we have that good 'ole clay soil too (pretty bad actually) and all we do is give her those fertilizer spikes by vigaro ever so often and that's it! when i say she's been through alot, i mean that we've moved her twice, she's been through 2 floods (neighbors retaining wall broke during heavy rains 2 years ago) and had to sit in standing water for about 3 weeks in our clay soil. plus, we're in a funky yet beautiful little valley (think california cows') that's right on the bay, so it gets very hot and pretty cold along with the moisture from the bay. for example, we've just had this outta nowhere heatwave for the last 3 days after tons of rain, and now today the fog is so thick, and it's damp and chilly! yes, her tips do brown from time to time, but she's doing just fine. we just keep her trimmed and fertilized. that's it. hope this helps and good luck! angela

Queen palms need a heavy dose of minor elements. These minor elements are sorely lacking in most florida 'soil'. If the new growths are smaller brownish and frazzly looking then your palm has what is called frazzle top. This is caused by a lack of magnesium and manganese in the soil. It probably can be salvaged, you need to get some(3 lb bag)of both items (manganese, magnesium) melted in a 5 gallon bucket and pour the solution around the palm, stay within a a 3-4 foot radius of the palm as this area is where roots are most concentrated and repeat monthly. When you see a regular green flush of new fronds, then you can just start using palm special fertilizer. At that point you should be in maintenance mode and if memory serves me correctly the right dosage is 1 lb per inch of trunk diameter applied (spread out evenly within the canopy drip line) at least quarterly.

Queen palms need deep watering to keep the roots underground... otherwise, the roots will come to the surface looking for water, and they spread far and wide (they look like skinny "wicked witch" fingers/knuckles coming up from the ground). As for the frizzly look, they may need manganese. I usually buy fertilizer spikes online at www.lutzcorp.com/palmtrees/ (some say spikes are worthless, but I've had good luck with mine from Lutz) I'm in NorCal (Bay Area) and we also suffered horrible frost this winter. For the first time, my Queens took a beating. But I'm pretty sure I haven't lost them... just kind of ugly right now :(
