I have noticed some cracks in one of mine as well. I have wondered if this is normal as well. It's plenty firm from top to bottom. Does yours look like this?
Maybe someone can offer some help for both of us.

Chris, your plumeria looks like it has stretch marks from rapid growth. See the link at Plumeria 101* below. Karen B, I donÂt have any suggestions about your concerns.

my plants that got so much rain and cold nights is my concern. What I am seeing on the plants may be normal. I haven't grown them long enough to know the answers.

I have a lot of cracking of skin, and it falls off or dies, In its place is brown wood, hard as a rock. Now is that area dead? or is that normal. Especially on celadine on the lower trunk, lot of the skin on one side is off and is a long verticle wide brown woody looking area..am concerned if that is dead wood will the lower trunk support the plumeria tree.

I wish someone could discuss this problem and about the skin on a plant. Some of mine are woody looking..have one that is yellow brown!!

would appreciate advise.

thanks for showing your picture..I have a lot of cracks on mine too.. guess then that is ok according to Phillip. do you have little bumps sticking out? wonder what that is?

Still icy in your area? I am originally from Missouri, had really bad weather there.

There are some little bumps, but not many. I have stretch marks, but no gouges like you describe in your original post.
I'll watch it closely this growing season for changes.

We've had spurts of really cold weather, but not much icing conditions. I'm about 30 miles from the Missouri border where they have had plenty of freezing rain this winter. We've not had any snowfall to amount to anything. All of my plumies are in the garage and the rooted cuttings and seedlings are in the guest bath 'greenhouse' for now.

Karen- I do not have an answer for you. I have several of the most damaged plants from the "big frost" with considerable cracks and open sections. I had a plant that lived for years with a big crack but it died in the freeze. I am wondering if mine will survive or need to be replaced as they are part of one of my hedges that took the biggest hit. They have started new branches but I do not know if in the long run they will grow normally or not. Bill

Thanks for coming in..wow, not totally what I hoped to hear..but do understand. Red white has a lot of cracks too..that plant has never grown, just put out leaves and bloomed. would like to see it get new branches. Have a cracked branch, bumped it..may have to cut it, hate too.

Yes, Celadine froze twice..first time was on the patio, but made it..but this one of constant rain, in the ground, cold too much. Will keep a watch on the cracks, gouges are strange, hard wood. Hope the wood skin areas near the trunk doesn't keep going around, no softness, did watch for that. May take it up and see if I have any rotting roots before I give the epsom salts..If healthy roots, will see what spring brings.

I hope yours will survive too..Know you losing so many of your special ones is devistating, you cover it up well..know it hurts..thanks.

I would suggest not messing with your plants so much. Treat them as normal. They will grow or not but constant digging up plants is not good for the plant's health. A gentle pull on the stem will tell you much. If it resists it is still rooted, but if it pulls right out of the soil it was damaged or did not root. If you come my way anytime this spring and want another red/white I have some BIG cuttings (four foot tall, many branches) you can pick from. E-mail me if you have an interesr and I will pick out a few. Bill

appreciate that, very nice of you..will see how it does when it warms up..my best bloomer ..lot of tip damage. Pray it will be ok. Ok.. will leave the plants alone and see how they do. Poor kaulda wilder has no tips, just wood.

kauka wilder is a very sensitive plant for me. I have a medium sized one in my back yard that my friends want cuttings from, but every cutting I have started has not made it. I just noticed one I rooted last year totally rotted this winter. Sadly, i love the plant (especially the smell) so I hope my one plant keeps going. Bill

did not know Kuka wilder was sensitive..will leave it alone now, was going to move it to a pot. Small plant that I got a maryilyn one, put it in the ground early summer. Did not have a pot then. I hope with no claws just wood on top will do something. Top almost looks like I could pull the wood chunk off. hope produces from the sides.

I just hope the ones that froze will bloom this summer, being I don't have many that flower. .Good luck on your kaulda wilder.

I never knew that KW was a sensitive Plumie. Thanks for the heads up. That explains why I have lost a few of them.

Mickey- I find that the red/oranges (KW, Jeannie Moragne,) and many reds are sensitive and can be hard to start. When i started using my plastic water bottle in the center of the 1 gallon then water, remove he water bottle and put the cutting in the center of the hole left by the water bottle, then fill with dry soil mix, I had greater successes with these. Bill

I lost a KW. Didn't root. Jeannie Moragne was difficult, but finally rooted AFTER I broke off the developing inflo. Other reds have been easy or hard, just seemed to depend on the variety.

I just bought a cutting of KW. Should be getting it in the mail soon. I am just now reading that this Plumeria is sensitive. Does this means it is also hard to root? What are some pointers you might have to assure rooting?

kbauman - so sad to read about your Plumerias. I hope they will all be OK. I read about some of the frost CA got earlier this winter. Good luck.

Use rooting hormone. Cut the tip at an angle, after it stops milking, dip it generously in rooting hormone, any kind works, and put it in the shade for two weeks, let the end shrivel up, then plant it in the proper soil recipe and don’t water it too much so the hormones stay in the area of the tip, that’s what I’ve done and I rooted 9 successfully. All candy stripe and the white with yellow centers, I’m unsure of their real names.

I have the same problem in middle and at ground level. If I cut it I will have no bottom hope I can find out not loose my plant. Not damp at all just smooth
