The golden cane (if that's Dypsis lutescens) normally sends up a lot of side shoots from one plant. It looks like that's what's happening in the photo. They do not look like multiple plants. Likely the main mother plant was trimmed off and the suckers were left to grow. I do not know how long this can be sustained. Rhapis palms normally grow slowly and are good candidates.

I first heard of these a couple years ago. I think they're mail-order only and from over-seas, which makes me suspicious.

To me they just look like young palms. They don't really look too much like bonsai palms.

I love to torture plant,palms no excepton lol. You will not arrive at a true Bonsai but a dwarfed palm. Any of the clumpers are a good choice and decide at what level you will allow it to grow ,would suggest no less than one quarter mature height. Have kept Dypsis at less than 2 meters but they did not mature(no seeds)
There are several ways of "torturing" them but eventually you need root pruning. Would also suggest starting from seed. or if lucky one that has been abused for years but will probably need root pruning right away.
Single trunk palms are much tougher due to the tap root.
I grow royals and queens at under 3 meters . but they did not mature so are really just stunted,not true "Bonsai".
BTW Be prepared to spend years doing this. Dwarfing is for patient gardeners lol. gary

I think I had the wrong idea about these bonsai, thinking that you can keep small in small pots. I have seen old tub grown golden canes that have started to push themselves out of the pot and start looking like adults. I saw apic of a "bonsai" P. dactylifera which just looked like a potbound specimen.

I went to a specialist bonsai store yesterday and found these awesome pots for creating miniature landscapes with a pond and a rock outcrop. I bought one thinking it would bee cool to do a Penjing of a beach using wedding palms instead of coconuts which wont grow here.

Are there any other "miniature" palms that would suit this purpose?

About the shortest growing palm that I'm aware of are Chameodorea ,huge family and a couple will mature at under 2 meters!! There is even one that takes on a vine habit.
Of course there is always bamboo. Will take any abuse you can dish out lol
I always get a lot of flak that these are not relly "Bonsai" because they don't mature. But at a sixth the normal they certainly are "dwarfs?? lol gary

I went up to the nursery and picked up a double planted weddel palm (Lytocaryum weddellianum). I shook it out of the pot and lucky for me most of the roots were rotted so there was no need for pruning! It is now planted in its little bonsai tray. I know its kind of cheating using this small species but I like the dwarf coconut look.

Good luck!! Be prepared for many years of careful attention to it lol I would have to agree with the Bonsai people that palms are tough but certainly not impossible.
