Mediterranean Fan Palm Sucker Removal

Hi,

I have two Mediterranean Fan Palms that are about 6 years old. They both have way too much going on at the bottom and I'd like to remove all but a couple of the additional trunks. With all the suckers growing they look messy and take up way more room than I can spare.

My question is how do I remove this excess growth without injuring the main tree? I had thought perhaps I'd simply get a sharp knife and carefully cut them away from the tree, but if that's going to kill the main tree, I could just cut them back to the ground and deal with keeping them beat back that way.

Also, if I can remove the suckers, can the larger ones be planted in pots? Would I need to do anything other than add root stimulator, water, and fertilizer?

I'm doing some major yard renovation this Friday, 5/25, so any answers prior to then would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
