Can cuttings be sent to California or from California?

Yesterday I was talking to some "neighbors" who actually live a couple of blocks away from me. They mentioned that they had been told you can't take cutting out of California back to Hawaii, that the Department of Agriculture will not let them- I don't know if it the Hawaiian or California Dept. Of Ag. My sister works for the Hawaiian Dept. Of Ag., which is actually run by the Feds. I will ask her what she knows about it. I had suggested that she check with plumeria growers in Hawaii that actually ship, and see what they say. She has only heard this word of mouth. Has anyone ever tried to take cuttings out of California to Hawaii? I wonder if it is because she would try to take them on the plane, vs, shipping them. She does know to remove all of the leaves.

I am sorry that that was kind of s long drawn out message. I wanted to say that she has friends with a plumeria with a beautiful big pink blossom that she says she has never seen on the big island. she would like to take a cutting back with her to plant on her property.

In my experience you can send to most states except: Hawaii, Arizona, Florida, and sometimes Texas. These states have strict ag depts. and require certification. Plants coming into California are also subject to loss unless certified and inspected. Hawaii had a borer outbreak at the Koko Head gardens and has been very strict on importing plants from what I hear.

Nice to know you made it safely Meerkittie and sorry to hear you had to leave your babies behind :(I know it is always a lot of work to settle down in a new city. Montreal is always more or less green in the summer, this one though is extraordinarily green with all the rain we are having. for some one who comes from a dry climate, all the greenery is very beautiful. For us Montrealers it is nice but the majority would appreciate having a bit of a more traditional summer with more sun. We have a few garden centers and nurseries around the city. If you have a car, it will be easier to get there I will try to gather a few of them and post them in a few days. In the meantime, perhaps you would like to check a farmer's market in the Plateau around Marianne St. Apparently the farmers are there every Sunday morning until the month of October. Maybe , they carry plants as well. You could also check MarchÃ© Jean-Talon. They usually carry plants and flowers. Also Atwater Market and MarchÃ© de l'Ouest in the West Island. In any event, let us know if we could help in any way. We will be glad. P.S. I hate to admit that I have carried a few cuttings of quite a variety of plants in my suitcase from overseas and I have lost very few of them. I still have a geranium that I brought from Seville 25 years ago! Pssssst.!

Thanks Bill. I've seen pictures on the internet of most of them, but if you have pictures of any that you've grown I'd love to see them. You always post great pics of your yard. Jeff(cool boyfriend who bought these for me) has a Plastic Pink that bloomed last year. I've wanted that one ever since seeing his. I had a Pu'u Kahea a couple years ago that didn't make it for some reason. Looked fine one day and a gonner the next. I guess I'd better make some more space in my little yard for the new additions. Last fall I said I was done buying new ones because it was getting too crowded.

Thanks for the info. When I think about how strict Hawaii is on fruit etc., I can understand it. The reason they are is strict is because as an island, once something get onto the island, it stays. A borer outbreak would not be good. I will have her check to see if she can get it examined by the Dept. Of Ag. If that would help.

Do you know why they have a problem with mongoose ( geese?) in Hawaii? They had consulted some " expert" to find a natural way to get rid of rats on the islands living in the palm trees. They were told that the mongoose is a natural enemy of rats. They brought in the mongoose and let them loose. Unfortunately, they discovered there is a tiny problem, one of the creatures sleep at night, the other during the day, so they rarely see each other! THAT is why you see. Mongoose running across the roads in Hawaii. Kind of a funny story really. Thanks Bill for the info.
