Sabal Palmetto: Will I see any growth this yr.

I got two sabal palmettos from St. Augustine the week after Easter. they were badly rootbound so I repotted them in a pot about double the size. I know they're are slow growers but will I see any new fronds this summer or will they mainly focus on root growth.

I don't know how big yours is but my seedling always gave me 2 fronds a year

If you hold the newest frongs strait up they are about 4 feet. Of course they have no trunk yet.

Thanks Lago Mar... I live off of Great Neck... Lots of damaged ones around here, it just so sad. I have seen some that have green pushing now.. So if they would clean them up, they would look a lot better. I'm not sure of the damage to the big Sabal, but I did have one at our business and I did lose if after a few years. The trunk is peeling away, but it is looking green and lush, so I'm not sure what this is. The good news is that all of the tress in the back yard will survive including the questioned Butias.. I just need to trim the Sabals and just be patient with Mother Nature. I did have to get rid of the other Butias in the front yard. It wasn't planted very deep and was the youngest of them all.. Sorry to dig this thread up from earlier this year. I was struck my Butiaman and Dixieboy's observations about sabal palmetto seedlings growing at different rates in the ground compared to their potted counterparts. I have observed the same thing from my sabal experiments this year. I had gathered a few hundred s. palmetto seeds in Savannah in March. I cleaned the dried shells off and soaked them in water for 24 hours. I planted an entire tray of peat pots in a seed starter kit. The leftover seeds I scattered in a few spots in my garden beds. The seeds in the peat pots sprouted amazingly fast and I put the them in larger pots. Throughout the summer they grew well, but I lost quite a few to too much or too little water. The remaining potted seedlings great. However, in mid summer I started noticing sabal seedlings popping up all over my garden. Now, those seedlings are nearly twice as tall as the pot-raised ones and are getting their second leaves. It'll be very interested in seeing if they survive our winter and will keep close watch over them. I've had s. minor seedlings winter-over and a friend here has had baby windmills naturalizing for years.

You've got palmetto scale. A gift from your friends south of the 30th parallel. Go buy a small spray bottle and mix water, horticultural oil and a few drops of liquid detergent. Douse the leaves and the bud area. Repeat a couple more times during the summer.

An after winter update on the above sabal palmettos. So sad to report that the hurricane cut palmetto didn't make it according to the guy who planted it. I had high hopes since this was such a mild winter even with two, short mid-teen cold snaps. It was not killed by the winter, rather than inappropriate, over protection by the new owner. Apparently she wrapped it in plastic with xmas lights right on the fronds, so it got cooked! So sad. If she had just ignored it like last winter, it would've done fine and likely added more fronds this summer. My friend said she is clueless with semi tropicals and doesn't listen to advice. The small palmetto at the mini golf course looks great. I really think more 10 and 15 gallon potted palmettos need to be tried here. It's the best option for marginal areas according to Gary's Nursery in New Bern, NC. It's a shame they've not been available locally. Finally, the experimental palmetto seedlings that I scattered all over my garden survived exceedingly well with out any protection other than leaves that fell around them. Two or three that were most exposed and open on the west side of the front porch suffered burn. But all if them are very green at the baseses of their strap leaves and new straps/spears are emerging. I'm so disappointed about the HC palm, needless to say.

I wonder if top growth may be slowed some as now it's trying to create more roots?

That's what I'm thinking. In addition I don't know how much (or if at all) they grow when the average temperature is 55-65 like it's been around here. It's 80 now @2:30 88 tomorrow and 85 Thursday so maybe I'll see some movement.

Try giving two treatments of starter fertilizer this summer --and lots of W A T E R!

They probably won't start growing until late June or July when the weather is consitently warm. Then they'll keep growing until October or November.

"Consistently warm" being the operative phrase. 84 yesterday 87 today 85 tomorrow. Rain and low 70s for our 3 day weekend. I sure hope they're wrong.

I have a nasty, sinking feeling that this is going to be one of those F"#@#$@#$@)*'ing years where it's nice during the week and the weekends are crap (that's an official climatological word, "crap") LOL ):D

weather. com sais rain all weekend. The Detroit Free Press sais rain Friday morning and then sunny low 70s for the weekend. I can deal with that.

I don't know, many sabal palms are depressingly slow in growth (even in the TROPICS). I have seen faster growth in S. mauritiiformis (virtually impossible to purchase it seems).--So I am growing them from seed. I am also very pleased with my Sabal texana (which seems like a very robust plant). Also have a louisiana that is supposed to be relatively fast. I like Sabals--just wish most grew faster than plastic.
