Question about "growing from seed " tutorial

Hello, all.

I am curious if there is a post in this forum for beginners that outlines a typical growing season step by step.

Example:

Sow your seeds in moist soil around the last frost date
Fertilize once every two weeks until you have two sets of leaves
Transplant to a larger pot and place in full sun for 3-4 hours per day
Pinch off all flowers in the beginning
Over the plant has reached a height of 8 inches, let flowers grow
Etc
Etc
At the end of the summer, harvest all ripe peppers and trim back the top
Bring inside and water over the winter until next spring

This may prove helpful for newbies like myself just starting to learn to grow

Nope, pumpkins like all other squash have male and female blossoms on each plant. Biggest problem is pollination since apparently you have good vines and blossoms. They are insect pollinated, bees and similar insects. Some folks resort to hand pollination, which means taking pollen from a male from a male flower and putting in a female blossom. The females are easily identified because they will have a baby pumpkin behind the blossom.

Are you using regular florescent tubes, or the grow-light tubes? There is a difference, and for seedlings, you need the grow-light ones. Sorry but no. This claim has come up here before and the "you need" part of it simply isn't correct. Thousands of growers, professionals included, use nothing but regular, plain, inexpensive 4' fluorescent tubes to grow seedlings quite successfully. There is no need to spend the extra $$$ on special grow bulbs. The goal is green growth only, not the blooming and fruiting that require the grow bulb spectrum. Now of course you can invest in them if you wish. They certainly aren't going to hurt anything. But there is no NEED to use them. Dave

Dave is right. Greenhouse can mean a lot of different things. Like I have four of the mini-greenhouses- the four shelf things with removable covers. Depending on what time of year it is, they get used as shelves for seed starting or to hold wintersown jugs outside- or more like coldframes with the covers on outside to help with hardening off plants. In the past, I have occasionally used a mini-greenhouse in my solarium with the cover on and hot water jugs in the bottom to overnight tomatoes and peppers if the solarium was supposed to get too chill for them. That might be closer to what you are doing. But without a proper heat mat, I wouldn't try using the mini-greenhouse as a home to start seedlings.

Hi jifjifjif,

Last year was my first year growing hot peppers from seed. I scoured the FAQs last year for tips on growing them.
There is a lot of good information but maybe this will help too :)

THINGS I WISH I KNEW THAT I COULDN'T FIND ON THE FAQS:

1.) Some cats like to eat Jalapeno leaves when you are not looking.

2.) Do NOT get too attached to your seedlings if you have a limited amount of space (naming them, photo journal, etc..)

I'm sure there are others I just can't think of now..

The problem with getting to that level of detail is there are a lot of variables that affect what you do and when. On top of that, there are many varying opinions. What works for one person may fail miserably for another that has a slightly different situation.
