I've started...

Pepper, tomatoes, squash, beans(pinto, green, yellow, italian rose, and black eyed peas).

I am having zero luck getting tomato cuttings to sprout roots in water. Everyone says it is so esy, so I must be a dunce. I've tried both tip cuttings of 6" and suckers. Nothing roots. They just sit in the glass of water for weeks, not dying,but not rooting.

I plan on growing beets, lettuces, spinach, cucumbers, beans, and carrots. I'm hoping my current tomato plants hang in there through the fall.

I haven't started a thing because I don't have a bare square inch in which to plant.

Once I harvest potatoes, carrots, and corn, I'll likely start something, but I don't know what it will be yet. Probably broccoli, carrots, potatoes, squash and bush beans or more blackeyed peas. The heat has slowed down the growth/maturity of everything in my garden, and I'm not getting lots of rainfall like so many of you are, so my garden's production, while good, seems late and slow.

I did plant pole beans, purplehull pinkeye peas and okra earlier in June (or maybe it was in late May) in the spaces left vacant after I harvested broccoli, cabbage and sugar snap peas. In Sept. or Oct., or maybe in August if my tomatoes peter out and I yank some of them, I'll plant cooler season crops like lettuce and other greens.

I've not started anything yet. I did seed several things in June but the bugs and heat got them before they amounted to anything.

I'm thinking I'll head out today, if I beat the rain, and start getting the empty spots ready. The weeds have been getting a bit too comfy in the vacated spots.

I'm so glad to see this post. I have never done a fall garden but hope to have one this year. Do you think its too early down here in SW OK to start putting out some squash, beets and maybe a couple tomato plants??

I didnt know you could take cuttings off of existing tomato plants. I think that would be the easiest way to get my new tomato plants. I have a greenhouse that I start all of my cuttings in so I think I will start those now.

I'm going to link the OSU Fall Planting Guide for you and it gives recommended dates. However, when I have empty space, I plant earlier than those dates if I can. With this decent weather, I'd go for it and plant now if I were you. If the sun returns with a vengence before your seeds sprout, it wouldn't hurt so cover newly seeded areas with cardboard or something to shade the soil and help keep the ground cool until you get germination.

I've linked Tom Clothier's chart that shows how long it takes seeds to germinate at various soil temperatures.

Before direct-sowing seed, it might be a good idea to check your soil temp (I use an oven thermometer with the metal probe) at seed-planting depth and compare that to his charts so you'll know how quickly/slowly seeds should germinate at current soil temps.

You may want to pick up some rooting hormone for your tomato cuttings. It comes in a small vitamin looking bottle and you can get it at any big box or even retailers like WalMart for around $4-$5. Sometimes you can also find it in an even smaller pouch like packet (like the size of a yeast package). You'll only need a little bit and it will last you forever.

Just dunk the cut end of whatever you're trying to grow into the white powder before planting it directly into the ground or container. I've used it with great success both for outdoor plants as well as houseplants. Obviously if planting outside, you'll need to water frequently until the plant gets established.

Works like a charm!
