Results with Jubaea in the Pacific Northwest with Jubaea have been mixed. While there are no known large, trunked specimens in the region, some have persisted here in sheltered gardens since the early 1990's without protection, and others have been damaged or killed in severe winters. Jubaea seems more likely to survive a severe winter if it is not pampered with too much water and fertilizer during the growing season. For the best chance of survival it should be in full sun, and it should not be watered or fertilized in late summer or fall once it is established. Old, established plants in Europe and elsewhere have been known to withstand temperatures in the single digits without harm. Certainly any effort to grow this magnificent plant is worth the risk.

One thing to be wary of larger palms of this species is that many unscrupulous dealers on ebay upsize the pot and when you go to pot it you find that only 20% of the soil has roots. Ask me how I know! My ebay palm was bought this late summer on ebay and after the damage due to being shipped in a pot that was way too big, it lost its spear and I ma unsure whether it will recover given that it is being overwinterd for the next two months in a house that won't get over 70F for that duration. the other remaining leaves are still very healthy. Anybody know my chances of recovering from this? Be very wary of ebay palms of this species. If I had to do it again I would have bought a seedling. The one I bought is just entering the palmate stage of youth.

Its a very desirable palm and I would think it would sell for quite a bit more then a CIDP per wood foot. I would guess at least $1000/wood foot would be the retail price. I would call some local nurseries as a buyer to see what kind of prices you get. Even if they don't have any, they will still be able to give you a rough price. You may also want to check palm talk (google it) and post there. There are lots of nursery people there that can give you a good idea of its value.
