Spined Soldier Bugs and Brown Stink Bugs

This is in response to a question Hank asked in another thread about how to tell these two apart, since one of them is very beneficial, and the other generally is not.

Hank, the easiest way for me to tell them apart is that the Spined Soldier Bugs have slightly more pointy shoulders and brown stink bugs have slighty more rounded shoulders.

On the attached link, if you look closely at the photos of the brown stink bug and the spined soldier bug, you'll see the pointier shoulders on the spined soldier bug. In real life, the shoulders on the ones I see are often even a bit more pointy than they are on the soldier bug in the link.

Also, and this is not really a recommended way of telling them apart because you don't want to kill the good predators like Spined Soldier Bugs, but if you crush a brown stink bug and kill it, you'll smell a stinky odor. If you crush a spined soldier bug and kill it, there is not a stinky odor.

Hope this info helps.
