I would think they would be fine. 20F is only about -6C and they are rated for -20C to -25C. Plants in pots would be more susceptible to cold temperatures given the roots would not be protected as they would be in the ground but at that temperature unless there was a severe wind chill to magnify the actual temperature they should be fine.

That's a pilea, common name is probably variegated artillery plant or something close to that. Look it up under Pilea microphylla 'Variegata'. I found another one this spring and have it in a similar container. I'll try to take a pic once it fills out nicely. If you like it, I can send it to you when it starts to cool off. I don't have room to over-winter, though I've over-wintered the green species plant. I wouldn't let it loose in my garden though, if I was considering that option. ;-) Al

I guess it depends on what you consider the cutoff between crammed and snug...To me, the ideal 'snugness' for many palms is when you can easily pick up the palm by the stem and there is not chance the pot will fall off. And when you finally do take them out of the pot, the roots retain the shape of the pot. There should be some soil, but if there is a lot less soil than roots, then it is getting close to time to pot up. Sure isn't that way with most other trees I have to admit. However, I have noticed that many of the other types of plants I find interesting (Aloes, Agaves, etc.) seem rarely to suffer from their roots being crammed in pots, either. Most of the roots of these succulents are non-functional other than just to hold them in place. I have grown palms for over a dozen years and have many palm-grower friends who have quite a bit of experience growing palms (this is in California... perhaps something is different about palms grown elsewhere?) and it is pretty obvious that many palms seem to like their roots 'crammed' in a pot.. unless there is not much soil left... then they suffer... but they certainly grow well in a crammed pot. In fact, many grow their own palms until the palm literally rips the pot apart.. then they know it's time to pot up (of course if you're in the business of selling palms, a larger pot sells for more, so many do not wait this long for their sale plants). This is not true of all palm species, but certainly seems the case for many of the larger ones. I can't actually say a certain palm grows faster with its roots choking in a crammed pot, but for many it sure doesn't slow them down any (like I said, within reason... palms in pots with only roots and no soil definitely suffer so I wouldn't let them get that crammed.. but most palm roots work their way out of pot by then). Moving palms up a pot size often slows them down a bit... takes them a while to adjust, but once the roots start filling the new pot again, the pace picks up. To answer the Chamaedorea elegans question, C elegans is always a solitary palm. Not seen or heard of one suckering. However, often they are sold at Lowes or Home Depot with many palms in one pot so one might think they are suckering palms. Many other species are sold similarly at these outlet stores. You can dump out the soil and see the separate root balls, though taking them all apart can be a bit of a challenge. Palms like Chamaedorea cataractarum are suckering palms and you can actually see a new stem coming off the other root/stems if you dump them out of the pot. Perhaps you have a different species of Chamaedorea (seifriziis are common and look vaguely similar and sucker profusely).

tropicalzone7: Thank you. I don't know how frequently you check ebay, but if a seller from the southeast is selling princeps, it's the real deal. There's a more common seller who stocks princeps, but they're much greener. They're nice too, I have two from him that I didn't photograph. Coldplant is a good source if you're looking for fresh seeds. I had a very high germination rate with his seeds. earthworm73: Thanks for the kind words. The creeping really is something else. They're the only palms of mine that have grown that way. Unfortunately there are no south facing windows in the house, as that's where the garage is. Some palms are more resistant than others, but all tend to suffer a bit during the winters by the way of the leaf ends turning brown. They all bounce back once they're brought back outdoors. Over time I've gotten better at timing watering, and how frequently I use fungicide and bug spray. My parents have also started to utilize an electric space heater for the living room, and the spare bedroom where many of my seedlings are is kept that's closed and therefore much cooler. The palms in that room tend to do the best, the cooler temperatures may make them more dormant. islandbreeze: Thank you, and I think you may be right. They may very well not be takil, but nainital, or some other trachy. I've seen photos of potted T. oreophilus and geminisectus that creep similarly to my mystery trachy. I'm not at all familiar with nainital, but if they're known for growing this way that may be what I have, like you said.
