My first herb spiral

I've been reading Gaia's Garden during the last few weeks. It's an interesting read. I'm not sure how much I can use all the information. I certainly don't see myself building swales or having much of a wildlife zone in my ~50x75 foot back yard but I'll give some things a try. I'm starting with a herb spiral. Though I might plant some other things besides herbs maybe some annual or perennial flowers, greens or small vegetables.

Not sure if I used rocks that were big enough but I guess it's a good first start. Worse case scenario I could use the rocks elsewhere and spread the planter's mix around and rebuild as it really didn't take much time once I had the supplies ready to go.

It looks pretty good!

I was thinking of making one, but I guess it will have to be next year. I'm so indecisive about where I want to put it. Out the back (kitchen) door is recommended, but that's the shady side of the house.

It would be great if you posted a link to what it looks like next year.

I also agree it would be nice to see this in full bloom. Nice job! We are just starting to design the Zone 0 which will involve a herb garden of some sort. I can design just about anything but I must get the approval of the Queen. She is a little more concerned about the neighbors than I am. :-))

Agree that it indicates the growth of anaerobic bacteria and their by-products. That usually results from over-wet soil kept in a warm, low oxygen environment. But to know for sure we'd at least need to know the brand of potting mix used - hopefully it wasn't actual soil (dirt). Some of the so-called "organic" potting mixes contain some ingredients (composted manures) that can smell quite bad when kept too wet but the odor goes away once it dries out well. Dave

Hi Jools, Those seeds I started 3 weeks ago are doing pretty well. I took 10 seeds, gave them (2) cycles of freeze/thaw, then chipped them as I described earlier. Of the 10 seeds, 2 germinated within 72 hours, and by day 10 there was a total of 7 germinated. Maybe the others were duds, or maybe they weren't chipped right. Who knows? In answer to your question, I use a gritty mix for the seedlings too, and planted the germinated seeds 1/4" deep, including extra perlite to cover the seeds to help retain moisture, in a terra cotta community pot. A total of 6 finally made it (pictured). I put a maximum of 5 seedlings in a pot. In a few days these will go individually into 4" pots, and after a couple weeks of recovery, I'll start acclimating them to outdoors. From here on, I'll overpot, just to save time. Community pot==> 4" pot==> 8" pot==> ?? When my larger seedlings (4" -- 8") first went outdoors, I was more than a little concerned bc all the plants developed tiny brownish freckles, which I thought was either fungal or bacterial, and I was all set to treat these when they spontaneously cleared up, with no damage to the leaves. So far, the temperature here has stayed below 85ÃÂ°F, and I have each terra cotta pot sitting in a dish which serves as a water reservoir, with that whole setup sitting in a larger container to shade the clay pot from direct sun. Remember, if the roots hit 85ÃÂ°, the plant is toast. So far, this setup creates evaporative cooling, and I'm pretty compulsive about checking the pot temps, especially on the warmer days. I don't have a good spot to plunge these in the ground. As long as there's water in the dish, the unglazed pot will provide root cooling, and the plant can have its full sun. If the local temperature ever gets too high though, I won't hesitate to put the plants in the basement for a few days. I hope this helps. It's not important what it says on the outside of the bag - what's important is what's IN the bag; and all "cactus mixes" are not created equal. Cactus mix 'A' may be entirely appropriate for a particular herb, while cactus mix 'B' may be entirely inappropriate for the same plant. There is no way to make a determination based on what label the packager put on the bag. If anything, I'd be concerned that some cactus mixes hold TOO MUCH water to be appropriate for either cacti or herbs; so Rhizo's hedging was entirely appropriate and essentially what I'd have said. Neither of us are willing to accept what it says on a bag of soil at face value unless we know the soil. Ideally, you want a soil that holds good amounts of moisture, but doesn't support perched water. Perched water is the water that occupies the soggy layer of soil at the bottom of the pot that occurs as a result of using MOST commercially prepared potting soils; so I would say that from the plant's perspective, what most of you consider to be ordinary, good-quality potting mix is too water retentive to offer your plant to grow at even close to its potential. I tend to look at things from the plant's perspective; and to a plant, there really isn't such a thing as draining too fast. There is a balance to be reached when it comes to watering frequency, but you can almost predict an increase in potential growth and vitality as the need to water increases. IOW, soils that need more frequent watering can generally be counted on to significantly increase the potential for growth and vitality, while at the same time increasing the growers margin for error when it comes to watering and fertilizing. Another thing to consider when patio growing is the 'heat sink' effect--how much extra hot may be coming from all the concrete, brick, etc? I have a townhome with a small enclosed backyard. The homes are brick, and I can get away with planting my basil a month earlier in containers next to the brick wall than I can out in my garden area. But, then, I have to move them when the heat sets in.

I could post a current picture but at the moment it wouldn't look too impressive. I covered it with thick layers of mulch (straw, leaves, spent brewery grains, etc.) at then end of fall time. It'll probably be another month or so until I remove most of the mulch to start letting the soil warm up.

It's still early in the season here but the herb spiral is coming along. I tried to go for a little of a bunch of different things including sage, a few different types of thyme, sweet marjoram, cilantro, mustard, amish lettuce, lime basil, summer long basil, chives, garlic chives, dill, parsley, curly parsley and sorrel.

Hopefully water flow doesn't create problems when the thunderstorms start coming.

How do you get to the herbs to harvest them, and how do you keep the mint from taking over?

I have my herbs along a walkway, and the mint is quarantined with a bunch of dry packed dirt between it and the rest of the garden.

I don't suppose bekajoi will see this but I wanted to warn her/him about some of the plants in their pictures before it is too late. The variegated Bishop weed (labelled 'Mountain Snow') is a notorious invasive spreader and almost impossible to eradicate once its got a grip. And it is actually edible. It was introduced in its plain green form into the UK by the Romans as a food plant. We are NOT thankful. Sweet woodruff, Ajuga reptans and cerastium tomentosum are also spreaders which are very hard to control. I would think very hard before introducing any of these plants into my garden and certainly not into a herb spiral which I wanted to retain its shape. There was a reason why they were being given away free - they are impossible to get rid of and I think they saw you coming!
