From what i understand, they grow fast, because they're part queen palm.

Yeah, that was crap. But a big improvement for at least the next week. After tomorrow, daytime highs in 60s and 70s and nighttime lows in the 40s, I can deal with that. I left all my windmill palms out through this little cold spell we had. I'm hoping to get them growing again with this coming week.

I like the way mule palms look. Look like a coconut but much hardier. They're a little out of my budget though...but I'm sure you'll be happy with it. Should grow very nicely for you.

I left my King Sago and sabal minors out but wimped out and brought my Sabal Palmettos in. I took them out again this morning. Some how some way I am going to drag my Jumbo potted Robusta out tonight.

Andy- Do you have a dolly to move that robusta with? If not, it would be an investment that's definitely worth the money.

I have a furniture dolly, that's not the issue. It's getting down the steps of my front Porch. I'll find a way.

Andy, use a small section of plywood. I cut sections of plywood to fit different levels of step obstacles (of which I have several different sized levels in my garden), and I can easily move some some substantial sized plants and pots even without assistance from friends, although I use them too when available. I store the plywood in the garage and pull it out when needed.

Actually I was able to get it down the steps no problem. My neightbor helped me lift it on the dolly and then it easily moved into position.

I have a question for you though...Have you seen any cheap Roebellinis at any stores around here? I got mine about 4 years ago from Home Depot for like $20, but now I look, and all they have are cat palms and majesties. My Roeby is really looking great, even after spending all winter in my unheated garage, and I'd like to get a second one with a little bit of trunk on it.

I didn't know if you just wondering about this from people up north where the growth rate would be the same, or from people in general. I have quite a few mule palms and a local friend of mine that I taught how to properly make these plants already has 500 of them, so I get to watch how fast his are growing with more genetic diversity than my group. As you would expect, it grows slower than a queen palm and faster than a pindo palm. Since they are a hybrid the ones that look more like a quenn will grow faster than one that looks more like a pindo. I have some in containers and plant that was 3 feet tall 2 1/2 years ago is now about 11 to 12 feet tall. I put it in a 45 though so that the root system will get large and make it grow faster, where it would stop growing for the most part if I kept it in a smaller container. My friend's plants have grown to be 6 feet tall from a seed in a little over 2 years in 7 gallon containers.

I have over 300 Mule palms on San Juan Island WA. The typical growth rate is anywhere from a foot to a foot and a half in my zone 8. When you put them in the ground they pick up speed...

I have noticed the ones I have in Washington. Typically run a few inches shorter a year then the ones grown in Florida. I can show you photos of growth rates from seedling stage to 3 leaf liners which typically takes a year.

This palm really has vairable characteristics and it seems like which ever one it looks more like, the more characteristics it has of that parent. In other words mule palms that looks more like pindos will be slower growing, but more cold tolerant than ones that look more like queen palms.

The weather here is a little below average this weekend. Cloudy skys and high temps in the upper 50s. Then it gets back to average next week with temps in the low to mid 60s, but nothing above average and the below average days seem to pretty much be just as abundant as the average days. Today is warm (low 70s), and no frost at all so far this month (and none in the forecast). Once May comes a frost is very rare and only occurs if a day gets below its all time record low (which goes back over 100 years).

I have 4 of them I bought as seedlings last December.They grow pretty fast,mine have doubled in size.I have them in one gallon pots but they need to be moved up to three gallon pots.I got mine in half day sun,8am to 12pm and they love it even as seedlings.I slowley got them use to sun,because they were growing inside for four months,Good luck.
