Bartzella peony produces two different colored flowers

My relatively new bartzella Itoh peony produced flowers with two different colors. Most are bright yellow, but one is pink.

Anyone have seen this before? I would love to make sure that it does this every year, even though I think it is probably unlikely.

several itoh varities have this features but not known with bartzella. wow that's amazing!!!

Thanks for the explanation Dar, I have never paid too much attention to flower color before as I usually only grew two different varieties most years, three one year and these were all well separated. This year I'm growing Insuk Wang Kong in the same location as my Italians but they're not supposed to cross, Uncle Steve's are pretty much isolated, as were the rice beans. All the others are growing together in the patch these I've bagged flowers as they were forming on the ones I need to save a few seeds from. Annette

The price tag. ;-D I've seen Garden Treasure and it's gorgeous!! I hear tell it's worth every penny of the $125 it costs! Many flowers, long bloomer... I'd never heard of Bartzella (which is MORE expensive!), so I did a little googling and came across this info for you: "Like Garden Treasure, [Bartzella] has deep yellow flowers and a good fragrance. It is perhaps a little taller than Garden Treasure and produces flowers on slightly longer stems. Google 'branch bark ridge' and then google 'branch collar'. Review links and/or images (from Google Images results). Once you understand these terms, make the cut immediately outside these points. You don't want to cut any closer to the trunk than these points. You do want to cut as close to these points as is reasonably possible. Looking at the picture is probably not quite as good as seeing the tree in person, but it appears that the branch collar is just about where the bark changes color. The branch bark ridge (the upper corresponding part of the branch collar) is obvious.

Ginny, littlebin is right. Herbaceous peonies normally have a round or slightly flattened round bud while tree peonies have a oval, pointy bud. I assume you see this on your other tree peonies. Another forum member, grycrna4u, actually separated a herbaceous sucker peony from a tree peony, think it was 2 falls ago? and wrote about it here with some excellent photos. I'd go back through his posts until you find it and try his method this fall, otherwise your tree peony will eventually fail, choked out by the more robust herbaceous root. You'll probably receive advice to pinch out the herbaceous growth but it sounds like it's too late for that to me, plus you say it's a beautiful flower so I'd hate to sacrifice it if you don't have to. The whole process is pretty labor intensive with carefully digging out the entire plant, washing the roots off really well so you can determine what root goes with what growth, and painstakingly and gently untangling the roots. I've read that if you dig one day and then divide (or separate in this case) then next day the roots aren't as brittle. Hopefully graycrna4u will see your post and offer advice since he's the only person I've heard of doing this and succeeding.

Congratulations! It maybe a bud mutation, similar to the bi-color Chinese tree peony "Er Qiao". Maybe If you don't cut it, it may reappear some day.

Peonea05: Can you tell me what other Itoh cultivar may also have this feature? I would love to get something like that.

littlebin: Thank you for the comment. What do you mean don't cut it? Should I just leave that stem as it is and not cut it next spring? How about I let it go to seed and see what would seed do? Let me know, since I really want to preserve this feature.

I actually have Er Qiao not far from this Bartzella. This year I got five buds, but none opened, which I suspect is caused by the spring freeze damage. Hopefully next year I will be able to have more flowers.

Singing in the Rain, Magical Mystery Tour, Julia Rose etc. The flower of these varieties usually changes to three different colors as the flower ages. For example for Julia Rose, the flower start from red to orange then to yellow.

Hi, Shoto, I don't know exactly how you can preserve this feature. Probably the best way is to do grafting. Not cutting and keeping that particular stem probably can help. Letting it go to seed probably may not help since most Itoh peony are infertile.

Wow, how interesting. Such a beautiful bloom too; I love the flares. It will be interesting to see how this plant performs in the future.

Shoto, if you are interested in acquiring another Itoh that shares this feature, I would definitely look into Lemon Dream. This photo instantly reminded me of it. It can have yellow and lilac blooms on the same plant, and some flowers can have sections that are lilac and sections that are yellow as well.

I have the same thing. It first appeared last year and I was advised to cut the stem at the bottom where it starts...which I did.

But it is back this year. So just going to leave it.

It is a mutation of the original root. If you just leave it you may loose it or that section of the plant could smother the rest.

If you like the flower label that stem then this fall dig down, locate the root, then remove.

My Krinkled White peony has two deep pink blooms this year as well as the white. I have had the plant for several years and this is the first time this has happened.
