Unattractive palm trunks
Comments (8)My response is not meant to be taken literally or comprehensively. It's just about a direction you might take to fix some things. 1. house needs visual separation from neighboring properties....higher level foliage mass of large shrubs/small trees. 2. upper portion of house looks exposed and unprotected...needs tree(s)overhead. 3. circle of small palms look to be without purpose and isolated from one another. Transplant into cluster at right side of front yard. 4. Cycads have strong "art" form. (They look like vases stuffed with bouquet.) Move to be front yard corner markers or to be as "gateway" at either side of walk/entrance (with LOTS of room to walk between them.) 5. small groundcover plants are spaced out spotty like a disease...consolidate into masses around other taller plants. 6. mulch looks ragged. hide bigger chunks and top dress all with finer grade mulch. 7. To me, it seems that the two palms (that we can't see top of) are troublesome because there are too many other things going wrong. If I was putting them in new, I'd probably put a cluster of 3 in one location (to the side) but I think if you fix the other things, they will not seem bothersome. 8. The front of the house has too much plain wall showing. I'm not showing it in my sketch, but I'd probably grow climbing roses (or something) on two simple, custom trellises...one at each side of the front window....See MoreTrunking Yuccas to accompany palms
Comments (7)Don ..... I grow half and dozen or so Yucca trees here on the east coast and I actually like the look they give more them palms. The grand-daddy of them all in size is the Yucca faxoniana ... huge barking trunk in diameter and very cold and moisture tolerant ..... the Rostratas are nice too, the Yucca elata in my opinion is the most cold and moisture tolerant maybe only second to the Rostrata. Make sure you plant them in well drained soil, do not over water, and you may want to raise the bed a good 6-12 inches .... make sure you identify where the root and trunk lines are and do not plant the yucca above the trunk line, it will rot at the base if you do so ... do not heavy mulch either ... Yuccas are very cold tolerant, more so then palms but they can not stand long period of moisture in the winter months, mulch holds to much moisture around the base, they are better off taking the cold at the cost of keeping as much moisture away from the base. Calplants mail-order in Vegas has large size Yucca trees for sale and ship. Good luck Like another post here ..... Windmill palms, do you protect them in the winter???...See MoreLarge Trunk Palms - Help Identify
Comments (4)If anyone is interested in growing these, they are really super easy from seed--even without bottom heat--in January. It's funny, but I don't find them so slow--compared to a lot of other palms. Certainly no slower than dactyifera (true date), reclinata or sylvestris (maybe even on par with roebelenii). They do want some space in their containers or they won't do anything--just make sure the mix is really well-draining as they really hate wet feet. Unfortunately, while they tolerant prolonged chill in the winter, they can't take real cold (below 20 F.), especially if wet. They seem real common in SF Bay area.Caution: their spines can take out an eye....See MoreRoyal Palm Trunk Help
Comments (3)This is the palm "flaring" its roots. This is common for many palms when they get older, especially Royals, Foxtails, Dates, even Queens will do it. Some Dates have 2-3 feet of solid root mass built under the trunk and exposed to the air. This also occurs if a palm experiences heavy moisture conditions, and wants to buffer itself from being flooded....See Morecactusfreak
