Hardy Chusan Palm - Windmill Palm

I have grown a few Windmill Pals from seelings I picked up at my mother-in-laws place in Florida. I have grown them inside for about 4 years placing them outside in the summer.

They appear to have stopped growing. I think it is because the pot may be to small. The pots are approx. 12" x 12".

The palms are only about 1.5' tall.

Do I need a much larger pot? I want them to max out at 3-4'.

Any help would be appreciated.

No, do not repot in a larger size pot. If they are 12x12 then that's plenty big for plants that are only 1.5 feet tall. Windmills don't have very large root systems like some other species.

They may have stopped growing because of the weather. Wait until we warm up more and they should start growing again.

They have been the same size for over 2 years. I want them to be 3-4 ft tall. So is it the pot restricting growth?

Pindo is hardier, but probably only by about 4 degrees or so. Mules grow faster, so they can recover from damage much more quickly. They also look a lot more tropical than Pindos. Neither is fully hardy in your zone, so I'd go with the Mule palm.

I winter all of my windmill palms that are in pots in the garage and they do great. The only time they don't do well is when I don't water them enough, even in winter they need some water. The leaves start to clamp up to tell you when they need to be watered. FYI...I overwinter 6 potted windmills this way. My others are all overwintered and protected in the ground.

Norcal, Its going to be a tough one for the tree. I think if you planted it in mid May, it would have gave the roots more time to grab. Im from Wantagh, which is very close to where you describe. I have a trachy I planted in the front of my house, about 2 feet away and kind of wind protected from the stoop. Its also on the South side. It has lived through its first winter, but took a major beating. The branches rotted and the center spear pulled out this spring. I left it for dead, but I did treat it with copper fungicide and it came back to life. Ill be surprised if it makes it through this winter. I don't protect it at all. My other trachy in the back yard is about 4 ft tall. This is its 3rd winter. First winter went well (I covered it). Second winter I removed the protection too soon. It looked fine in the spring, but decayed rather quickly. It rained then it became really cold. The center spear pulled. I treated it as well, and it bounced back rather nicely. This is on the west side of my garage. Its a hit or a miss. I also had Butia Capitata and Yatay and they didn't make it. Ill post pics when I can

I have seen that IF you add some heat into the shelters in winter that a Windmill palm can survive and do great. Heat is a string or 2 of incandescent Christmas lights woven into that shelter and use a "thermocube" or a "pipe heater" that you can find at any Home improvement store in the plumbing Dept. It comes on once the temps reach a certain temperature, like the ones at Home Depot come on when it goes below 39F and shut off once it reaches 59F. I use them in my greenhouse inside a small mini greenhouse for my tender plants since I am in zone 6a hardiness cold zone. Look on Youtube-" Growing palm trees in Avella, Pa". You'll see the shelters and the way the lights are used to provide heat inside the shelters. Avella, Pa is close to Pittsburgh, Pa so it is a zone 6b there and it will all work in zone 6a or maybe even lower since heat is added when needed, BTW, "incandescent" bulbs in Christmas lights are NOT LED lights, and I have ONLY found them at Home Depot stores, MOST places ONLY have LED lights and LED lights will NOT give off any heat. I would look under the pot to see if the roots are coming out of the drain holes. If they are, grab hold of the trunk and pull the entire plant out of the pot to see if they are root bound. If they are, then you know its time to repot. I have 2 that are about 2.5 feet tall with 8-10" trunks that are 3" thick at the base, and their pots are no where near 12x12. They grew like crazy last summer. If you do repot, it might be a good idea to mix in some dried up leaves for compost and fertilization. I did that when I first potted mine, and I think that's why they grew so nicely.

A trachy maxed out at 3-4ft would not look good for long, they really do not like being restricted and will more than likely look fairly sickly in a couple of years of reaching this height if not sooner. You would need to keep it out of strong sun as it would bake, water regularily and not overfeed. I understand washies deal with this kind of abuse slightly better and you can trim the roots.
