Where can I buy peonies online this time of year?

I know Adelman's and hollingsworth ship in fall. I called Hollingsworth and they do have some to ship now, but no doubles left and I need 5 pink doubles. I want to buy online so I don't have to go shopping around for them.

Any ideas?

Since they will not bloom until next spring at the earliest what is the rush.

Go ahead and order or go to Walmart or your local box store and purchase there. If you are like most people that go to one of the box stores you are probably there at least twice a month.

If you are expecting bloom this year you need to study what you plan to purchase.

There are a couple of sellers on Ebay with 100% rating selling Peonies now. Lots of pink doubles.

The link is a UK site I picked at random to show what I mean never used them. Hi Pngwin21, I too have been looking for on line veg, for the same reasons as you, in the UK we can buy things called plug plants, which are delivered to your home in a sort of gel stuff, I concluded that the reason for the lack of these companies is that a) no market (although thats two of us know so maybe we should start a business! haha) or b) the huge delivery area of the US and this can impact in a couple of ways, one the plugs would take so much time to arrive they are ruined (cannot tell you how long it took me to understand the lack of delivery in 48hr here)and the increased weight would of course mean extra postal charges. c)in the uk you order by November I think it was, so they know the demand and can plant accordingly for the same date troughout the UK thus cutting cost, the US has so many zones this maybe a logistical nightmare, although computers could solve this! or D)they just haven't thought up the idea yet! although I find that unlikely! that said, no t bar on a shovel! and runner beans as a flower! anything is possible! I would as now is the right time, cos I am about to start posting my spare seedling, try Craigs list and join freecycle, you are supposed to collect but if someone explained that they couldn't drive I would make my husband take it round, if at a reasonable distance from our home, offer to pay for gas, also do churches, scout groups that type of thing do plant sales?, look out for them and in the UK I also used to pick up loads of free seedlings at the end of peoples driveways, which they had left out as FREE, people may do that here? I intend to as well as craigs and freecycle. last sugestion, walk the neigbourhood pinpoint who has a garden, introduce yourself and ask about the local conditions, pest ect and then tell them you problem, gardeners seem a pretty generous bunch on the whole and I bet you get a bucket of plants and good advice, I got another Veg patch from a neighbour this way, she can't tend it this year and I just give her a share, fantastic! hope I manage to grow something! deereyebrow, my zone 3 summers generally are not overly hot, though there are exceptions. In my experience, if kept well watered, the large flowered types take the heat in stride and I believe it's no different for the sieboldii's As for other top favorites of mine, here's some in no particular order: Perle d'Azur Marie Cornelia ... a very nice small flowered white, though blooms on this one can be rather easily damaged Romantika ... a beautiful variety, though mildew prone Viola Barbara Harrington Prince Charles Victoria Jackmanii Superba Semu Princess Diana nhbabs ... snowfall in my region is rather reliable with constant coverage being commonplace, this is very beneficial when bitter cold descends. Other than being deeply planted (4 inches down and about 8 inches away from the cement foundation) the plants are not given any extra winter protection other than what snow might fall upon them. I do not hill them up with soil for winter, as the root zone is warm and this would cause tender new growth to push up through the mound of soil. As a side note, I've been growing clematis for nearly 35 years and have never noticed any problem associated with being planting near to a cement foundation, at least that's been my experience. The farmer's market here in Duluth had several different home grown varieties. I bought 4 different bulbs and separated them and planted about 32 cloves. Nice cuz I didn't have to buy 1/2 pound of one variety or pay shipping. Just hope they grow.

Where can I buy patio rose trees from online?

For what's it worth, I'm in Panama City and found it frustrating to grow rose trees. In the past 2 years, I had zero luck with rose trees from Lowe's. It was very frustrating to see 2 trees die within a week of purchase (kept in their bucket, well water). Gave up on that, bought a Julia Child rose tree from their main competitor while I was in Atlanta last year and it survived for a few months but struggled from the moment it was planted into the ground. After a couple of months, it was dead too. So I visited a local nursery while I was in Birmingham AL last month. After a careful inspection, the number of grafts (or branches) were greater and larger size/diameter too than those from the big box home improvement stores, the height and diameter of the trunk was greater and so too was the size of the bucket it came in. The local nursery bought these directly from the grower as bare root and planted them into their own buckets. The quality is visibly different, much higher, than those I bought in the prior failed adventures from Lowe's and HD. In short, I suggest you shop at your local nursery rather than buy online. The trick is to find a great quality nursery in your area that sells high quality rose trees. You'll know it when you see it. The nursery where I bought mine was an old school mom and pop type nursery - clearly not a fancy place but the selection and quality of the various roses and rose trees was phenomenal. It was clear to me they bought higher grade rose plants and trees that are not likely available for direct purchase by a consumer like you and I from the grower. Should you buy online, I doubt you'll get 5+ well sized healthy canes on a rose tree trunk. Every single one of those rose plants and the rose tree I bought from the mom and pop nursery have grown exceptionally well since their planting last month or two. I paid more than those found in the big box store but they have grown better than the others planted at the same time from the big box retailers. I've learned my lesson - find a mom and pop nursery and buy those better quality plants from them.

irish_rose_grower you will be able to find double pinks (& other colors) at hicks nursery soon. i do not know if they are in yet. i bought 5 a couple of years ago for my dad. the plants bloomed that year. they looked beautiful & have returned every year. so instant gratification is possible :). give them a call.

They will not bloom this year but I just went to CVS(a pharmancy) to pick up a script and they had lacti's in small pots. They had just arrived and the price was not posted so I can not tell you how much.

Peonies are now popular.

Wal-mart here, and probably everywhere, has the bins of bare roots; both pink and red doubles. Sarah Bernhardt or Felix Crousse the single root bags were labeled. The 3 in a bag were labeled simply "pink" or "red" and were priced the same as the single root. I bought some in March, potted them up and they've all sprouted up beautifully - quite tall and healthy looking. I'm patient, can wait a season or two for them to bloom. Peonies have nice foliage which can be a garden asset, too.

Hi, I live in Coastal Maine and I am new to this forum. I am also confused by the advice and websites that offer peonies. I assumed that many sites wouldn't ship peonies in spring because it was difficult to send the plants, but here many people are saying the won't bloom in the same year as planted in the spring. Is this just for bare root? I have always bought peonies at local nurseries in the spring and they have always bloomed the first year and come back the next year faithfully. The only time I had any problem with peonies, was when I got some from a local nursery that were dug in the fall. I planted them the same day I got them and in the same site as the rest of our peonies, and they didn't come back the next year or subsequent years. I too would love to find a place that will sell and ship peonies in the early spring.
