Just saw the two week extended forecast for my area--boy, it seems to be warming up nicely! Will be moving out the big cycads, Butias, Queens, Sabals, and Date palms. I usually protect them for about a week from full sun by keeping them in the eastern exposure then move them into the southern exposure. It's near a structure, so there is protection from wind, sun and frost (to some extent). Have to transplant quite a few of the Dates and Washingtonias into larger containers too. Gonna be busy this Saturday and can feel those aches and pains already. Moving into the mid 70s today with very windy/dry conditions.

Threw my back out yesterday in the garden. Mostly bending and raking out the dry leaves I used to insulate the bases of my new palms planted last spring. I won't need to do as much next year since they've all wintered over and will be established with the exception of the pindo which I will likely have to protect forever (and hence rethinking my choice). Take it easy in the garden.

Hi Wetsuiter,

Try heat on the back 10-15 minutes at a time and and don't re-injure it. I started venting my palms and removing some covering too because being covered in plastic is too hot now that we are 72*.

In 8 years, I've never done a transplant into larger containers until I've had time to get them out in the spring, and I'm sure not going to start now either. Those seedlings that come from WS are the hardiest seedlings you will ever have and survive pretty much anything, except for a late frost, which can be a bit of a problem for the annuals. That's why I never plant anything in my beds until May 31st, the old farmers way of doing planting in MA and it's never failed me, in 30 years of gardening on my own, on my grandparents farm and it sure hasn't failed me with WS either. As my seeds germinate, I move the germinated containers to a new area, making sure that I have all the annuals together in one section and the perennials in another. If there is a predicted frost, I cover the annual seedlings with towels, blankets, sheets, whatever I have to cover them with overnight and take it off in the AM. All is fine that way. Those seedlings that look overcrowded in their containers are fine just the way they are. There is nothing to worry about. Just HOS the seedlings and mother nature will take care of the weaker ones for you, if there are any in the HOS that you planted out. I don't plant out seedlings till they have 2 sets of true leaves on them and all is fine and has been fine for 7 full years of WS and don't expect anything different this year, year # 8. A few perennials I will hold of on planting out till the fall and those get planted into a larger container for the summer, but anything else that is headed for the gardens in the spring, out the go. Another thing I've also found is that plants that have a taproot, especially things like dill and poppies, actually benefit from a shallow container about 3 inches deep with soil. I've found that sowing the seeds in containers like these prevents the plants from growing the taproot till they are planted in the ground and taproots don't like to be disturbed to much. Fran

More from budding weatherperson, Kristin. Now I'm looking at "wind barbs." They are lines on a weather map showing the speed and direction of winds. The intensity is shown by length of the line and the number and size of the little arrow-like flags. The direction is kind of the same as real arrows, so a barb like this " >---- " would indicate a wind going from due west to east. Anyway, I'm still thinking that tomorrow and Tuesday may be good days for hummer arrivals here in western PA. In connection with that high pressure, it looks like winds will be coming up the Mississippi and Ohio valleys, in a coherent flow pattern. Then again, maybe my little birds are waiting until the next system. By Wednesday, the winds get more random again, and it gets a bit cooler. I'm trying to pay more attention to the feeders, now, and less to the migration map, but it's hard. Last year, the first ones on the migration map were on April 14th. This year, it wasn't until 13 days later, on April 27th. That's kind or worrisome. If they're 13 days later for me this year, they won't be returning until May 15th! Boo Hoo! Please, somebody cheer me up. Send me a hummingbird photo, a video, or some kind encouraging words! I want my hummies back! I miss read the info on it. They only use the front of the foot and hit open handed. It beat out American kickboxing. Don't know if it beat out Muy Thai. Muy Thai is shins,knees,forarm and elbow. MT is also open handed or fists and feet. My last instructor told me my biggest weakness is Ju Jitsu stuff. I HATE groundwork! I'm inevitably the only female in the darn class...or the girl I'm up against is bitty and shy. My "secret weapon"? I look like a librarian. Glasses and all. By the time whomever figures out I know how to fight it's all ready over. PJ

Oh PM, that is the most beautiful cabinet from windows! And it would fit my style so well! TFS! I'll show DH but I know what he'll say & I know that I'm thinking the same thing, too...WHERE WOULD YOU PUT IT??? (LOL!) I've used up all my space (& more) so I would have to get rid of something...& it wouldn't fit in DR or LR ...so probably the porch area (& I already have the corner door cabinet, Hoosier cabinet & hanging wall shelf out there! ;-) Thanks for that idea! ;-) I don't know if my DH would trade places for awhile...but I know your Mr. O would hate it here in Winter...the golf courses just opened ...tho they are soggy & cold! punk ...I don't know much about the shuttle loom or weaving...but I saw this at one of my fave consignment shops & it was $10 ...I knew the middle was called a bobbin cause I have some of those w/threads on them in a basket. First of all, I told myself I didn't need it...& then a few wks later I went bk & it was still there & 30% off (or something like that)...so I knew I needed it! :-0 Sounds like jane did some of this art, so hopefully she'll share some expertise on this pc! I lost one of my Pindos planted in the ground last winter. It was not protected and last winter was VERY snowy and/or rainy. It was more the prolonged cold of last winter (and the WET) as opposed to extreme cold that did it in. This winter would have been no problem. I may try another one in the ground in the futrure as I have a bunch in containers and they do grow fast. I would say that Pindos do appreciate the protection from the wettness. Also want to plant any T.fortunei as I have a pair in the ground but think groups of three look better than pairs (hopefully, three will not prove to be a crowd.) I already did a lot of spring chores back in December and February...leaf clean up, feeding and liming the lawn, fertilizing the broadleaf evergreens, etc.. --It was that warm. Enjoy the weather!

Greg, actually my nurse practitioner said ice for the first 24 hours to reduce swelling, then heat after that. Took it easy today and the ice seems to have helped. Still so much to do in yard... Saw first local tulip Magnolias blooming and heard spring peepers singing before sunset. Lots of 60s and 70s in forecast after 33 tomorrow night. No freezes in sight.

I was pretty sore from all the yard work I did this week, but it was worth it because the yard is now ready for summer again! I got a ton of plants outside now and tomorrow I will be bringing a ton of plants back inside. And then Sunday I will be bringing a ton of plants back outside again. The reason why I do this is because I would rather get them adjusted when temperatures are in the 60s and 70s because when its in the 80s all my indoor plants burn in the sun. Looks like freezes are almost a thing of the past, tomorrow might be the last one of the season (if we even get one tomorrow!)
Greg, do you still have protection on your palms? I uncovered mine a while back, but I just put all the lights and garbage bins away today. Still have them closeby just in case!
I just put a garbage bin over one of my pindos (with no lights) and so far it still looks alive and healthy which I was really surprised about. My stronger pindo was given full protection though!
Looking forward to next week's nice weather.

Okay, I got the Sagos, Citrus, Queens, Meds, Washys, Butias, and Dates out. Really needed a good watering. Just lost a couple of plants--a Chinese fan (due to dryness), and a mango (too cold in there for it I guess)--but the tropical guava and Caribbean avocado went through just fine.
