The growing season has begun (pics)

May have been 25 out but it was sunny. The front if my house faces south so if sunny I can open up my front door and let the sun come through the storm door. I have seen active growth in the past week or two. One of my bottle palms had it's newest frond start to fan out and pop up a new spear. I fertilzed them all last week for the first time since August.

They look great Andy-usually about mid to late Feb here(depending on outside temps)
I start to see significant growth on indoor stuff-last week when
it was 47ish outside and mid 70s inside even my Madagascar palm started growing!

Thursday is the big day to let some outdoor palms loose!

Congratulations, Debbie! You have every reason to feel proud. It takes a lot of dedication and patience to produce a rebloom on your orchid. I wish you lots of flowers from this spike (and is that another green protruberance, promising another spike at the centre base of the plant?). I still remember the thrill of my very first rebloom last spring. Since then, I haven't been all that successful. Most of my collection is a healthy green and growing, so maybe soon... I placed my phals up against the computer screen so that they can get some inspiration, but December is the start of the phal spiking season here - still a long wait. Good growing! Judy

Goumi season has begun!

Goumi fruit is normally a tiny berry, a little bit bigger than a green pea. They can be a pain to pick and process into juice or jelly. I bought two named varieties years ago - 'Sweet Scarlet' and 'Red Gem' and at some point I bought a second 'Sweet Scarlet'. While at a fruit nursery in Virginia I picked up a new one named 'Charlies Golden'. It still had its original tag from the breeder, a nursery in Tennessee. It took years to grow big and now that it has matured it is obvious that it is not 'Charlies Golden'. It has much larger berries, about the size of green grape. Flavor is the same. Whatever it is, I prefer it to the others since it is so much easier to harvest and use the fruit. At some point I stumbled upon a blurb online about a larger berried Goumi developed at the same nursery in TN, so I think somehow the tags got switched when they were tiny plugs. Now, I have also ordered another Eleagnus relative from a nursery in Hawaii. A Chinese variety called So Shang. The fruit on this one is the size of a small plum and has the same flavor. Though it is found in the foothills of the Himalayas I can't find any info on how hardy it is. I plan on planting some of them outside and seeing if they survive our winter and the rest I plan on keeping in pots. If they prove to not be hardy then I may plan on cross breeding them with the large fruited Goumi that I know is hardy. This could take years, but I'm excited to try it.

Hi keepitlow you asked in other thread When do you put them out for good? My figs are still dormant with little green tips. Should I start putting mine outside too? I put them out for good when night temps NEVER dip below about 40 but never on grass always on blacktop driveway or cement patio which keeps my containrs somewhat warmer. It varies from year to year. Some of mine now have green buds but there still tight and when they start to open the night time temps usually do not get below 40 but there have been odd years so if we get a cold spell they go back in garage until it passes. I then move them to the back yard patio eventually and leave them there for season in full sun. You asked should you put your outside too, what state do you live in? Do you have a place to easily move them back in at night when temps get below 40 each time? Are your containers 1 to 3 gallons or plants 1 season old? Im very careful about the temps the last 7 seasons and never have hurt them but im sort of a fanatic when it comes to my fig plants. ; ) You also metioned Last season I wintered all my figs in a unheated shed in Z6....all 6 of them died! I lost my first plant doing that in my backyard shed, i gave nextdoor neighbor a plant several years old and he stored in his shed covered with blanket thinking his would be ok but it died as well. Good luck with that and thank you for the kind words. I need some advice. I have a potted Sabal Minor i am going to put in the ground this spring. my front porch faces south and is back from the house. it I have a spot where plants can go in and it is blocked on either side by the kitchen window on one side and the garage on the other. it is therefore always 10-20 degrees warmer when the sun is out then the actual temperate on my front porch (it could be sunny and 50 and I'd have no problem setting any of my palms out on my front porch mid afternoon). I have a few questions.1) Do I run the risk of it being in too hot a spot in the summer if it when 90s, 2) If not what is the best soil I can use to fill in the spot where I will put it in, and 3) what would be the best weather conditions to put it in the ground once the threat off a frost or freeze is over?

I think it will enjoy the heat-just make sure it gets lots of water while it's warm out-it will love it!

Make sure the soil temp is at least in the 50s and don't water it to much until it warms up even more but water it in good after planting...

As far as the soil,I think anything that drains well-they are not to picky that I know of.

My little McCurtain(it is small)was still alive with only a cover
and no heat this winter-last time I checked-I will find out more Thurs!

I think your palm would benefit from being placed outside when temps allow-
that way it will adjust to the light there and the roots will adjust to cooler night temps so it isn't shocked being planted-I think I stuck
my McCurtain in the ground in early March but that was kinds stupid(-:

Thank you, Maybe I can put it in the ground in April if we have a warm stretch in the 70s. i can't wait for it to warm up.

Everything is looking good! I've noticed a lot of nice growth starting indoors also now! My gingers are 5 feet tall already and my potted gardenias started blooming. The coconut palms are quickly making new fronds and my bougainvillea put out ridiculous growth this year indoors (some of the branches grew 6 feet indoors!).
Not a bad indoor growing season this year, hopefully the outdoor growing season will be just as nice!

Good to hear, it's nice to be able to bring the growing season indoors. I'm a gardner also and for the first time I brought potted hot pepper plants in for the winther. i never knew you could do that. I just planted some bean, pea, tomato, and pepper seeds also. Good luck to us all this year.

I saw possibly mid 50s and rain Sunday. May take everything out for bath and a drink. Even if just for an hour or so.
