Peony for zone 11?

I wish I could grow hearbaceous peonies or tree peonies. Does anyone know of any variety that can grow and bloom in zone 11? Or some method to get them to grow and bloom here?

Peonies (paeonia) need a cold treatment period and is the reason why more southern climes do not grow this plant.

A better reason for yourself would be: aside from the fact that the plant needs a cold period....
can you buy the plant in your neck of the woods?

If you cant buy it, the question is moot.

A friend once, took a maple tree to his Florida home and planted it there. How he got it across the border---he refuses to say. He got it there; thought it would be a nice conversation piece for himself and his American neighbors.
He returned the next fall expecting to see his beloved maple....a neighbor had dug it up...it had died the first time it went through the Florida heat.

Of course it did....don't know what went through his mind when he thought a northern tree could grow in a southern climate. Same would happen vice versa....a Florida plant cant survive a northern zone.
So possibly you are thinking...."well, if I could buy one...say in The Carolinas...and bring it down.."

Why would you want to treat a wonderful plant like that.
I'm teasing you of course.

I agree though, once you see the blooms such plants make, its easy to fall in love and think you;d like to have one.

I feel the same way about Crepe Myrtles. Cant buy them up here...the closest I think one could be bought would be ---outside of going to Vancouver or Victoria on the west coast....Tennessee. I have friends in Knoxville.
But I wouldn't think to bring a plant back....because it wouldn't survive this zone....even if I thought it could be taken indoors in our winter. It wouldn't survive outside anytime.

Most temperate plants can't grow in the subtropics. However, a few can -- one variety of apple, and one variety of maple, for example. I'm hoping that there's one variety of peony that can grow here.

There is a vent, but I have yet to install an automatic opener.. :-( I was really caught by surprise with how hot it does get inside if it is a bright sunny day outside. The GH averages about 30-40 degrees warmer than the outside ambient temps. Only one of the pepper plants in the GH is growing blossoms now (it was a plant I originally started growing this spring). The rest of the plants have all been trimmed WAY back for overwintering. I only recently put the seedlings into the greenhouse.

It really depends on the specific variety of your peonies and the weather during the spring. Even here in zone 4b some of my very early peonies are showing a bit of color on the buds so should open soon--that is, relatively soon as we had 4-6" of snow last night and it hasn't stopped yet! Even within Itohs there are some that bloom earlier than others. Think First Arrival is supposed to be amongst the earliest (mine hasn't had a bud yet) and Garden Treasure about the latest. It is so hard to be patient though, isn't it? And when they bloom they fade away far too quickly. Nice thing about Itohs is most, when mature, have side buds that bloom after the main bud has faded so the season is almost doubled. Also, some have reported that, with the right weather conditions, if an Itoh is cut back mid-late summer they've had blooms (minimal, but blooms!) in the fall. Wouldn't that be AMAZING!!?? One of the peony forum members on Garden.org reported a bloom last fall. I had a bud on a tree peony last fall but it came out too late, weather turned far too cold and it withered. It sure was fun seeing that bud, though!

I am also in 7b. As long as the ground is not frozen, dig it up and replant wherever you like. It will be fine. I just planted 2 roots yesterday.

It depends more on your growing conditions. One of the interesting things that you can discover using zip codes and the maps is that many of the peony growers in central Oregon are in 8a & b. Many books mention the need for a month below 40F and not the deep freezes that some people seem to think are necessary. There are some peonies that need the extra cold temps but not all of them. I would hesitate with the full doubles that most want to grow because in the spring the temperatures warm up too quickly for the buds to mature. I posted elsewhere about CharMarron Peonies in San Jose. You may want to contact them to see what could be grown in your area. I know Don Hollingsworth used to ship to parts of California before the retired and sold his nursery. The new owner is not nearly as knowledgeable as he is. http://www.4peonies.com/

Hawaii50 check with Rick Rogers, Brothers Herbs and Peonies. www.treony.com to see what peonies will grow and in what conditions are needed. He does ship to Hawaii but adds a $10.00 surcharge to there and Alaska.
