What Cultivar of Witch Hazel would you recommend?
Comments (12)There is a lot of different kinds. In his 2005 RHS/Timber Press book on witch hazels Chris Lane recommends the hybrids 'Angelly', 'Aphrodite', 'Arnold Promise', 'Aurora', 'Barmstedt Gold', 'Diane', 'Frederic', 'Gingerbread', 'Glowing Embers', 'Harry', 'Jelena', 'Livia', 'Orange Peel', 'Pallida', 'Ripe Corn', 'Robert', 'Rubin', 'Sunburst', 'Vesna' and the pure Chinese witch hazel selections 'Imperialis', 'Jermyns Gold' and 'Wisley Supreme'. That's just the ones he thinks are good bets. I tend to prefer 'Pallida' but getting the true plant can be a problem. I grew one for years that never developed full-sized flowers, continue to see similar stock offered. It sets the standard on which to judge all others (Lane)...See MoreWhat's new in your gardens this year?
Comments (16)What else is new? Well, my daughter spread seeds all over my yard... I don't know what seeds and where they were planted. So that will be new... So far she's pretty excited to see her basil seeds (planted this time in a pot) growing. My lavenders seeded themselves and there's several new seedlings scattered in the front yard. Same thing happened with the ladies mantle. I've been gathering them up to put them in individual pots. I think I may have enough for plant sale in the fall.. Either that, or I will have to splurge on a cold frame. Actually the idea of a cold frame is not bad. I need to divide some plants in the fall, including the siberian irises, shasta daisies, make cuttings of my hydrangeas... hmmn. Does anyone know where I can buy one? What else is new? A pair of tree swallows has taken over the bird house - so I will be seeing young birds in the near future. Got to go. I will try reposting that photo when I get home. Ianna...See MoreHAVE: Hammamelis mollis and other free stuff

Comments (2)Yes, but you may wish to wait until they start to die back in the fall. Make sure you get the eyes/pips at the right level....See MoreUser
