Sabal palmetto (cabbage palm) germination question

I planted several seeds outside yesterday. Right now during the day it's about 80 degreese and about 50 at night. Was it too soon to plant or will the seeds be good in the dirt until it warms up a little?

You should be fine as long as you keep the soil moist. Remember, these seeds germinate in nature on a regular basis given the right conditions. It just might take a little longer if you planted them in the dirt outside rather than over a heat mat with an excellent soil mix. Good luck!!!

I am intrested in a heat mat. Do they increase your electric bill much? Can you get a solar or battery powered one? And can you get an inexpensive one?

They will get mature heads of from 4' to 10'. Pick an average of around 8' in diameter. If you want them to touch, plant them 8' apart. Closer than that and you have fronds banging into each other. If you want them for shade value, then put them closer. I would price out fully-booted ones just out of curiosity. They do look better than the clear trunks unless you plan on growing stuff on the trunks. I did a job in Ft. Lauderdale where we tied staghorn ferns all around the clear trunks of five existing Sabals on the property. That was 7 or 8 years ago. I would imagine by now they have fully wrapped themselves and expanded.

Sorry mate, but I agree with Andy! There is no way a sabal could produce 4 leaves in that amount of time. But a washingtonia could, easily. Also, the seedlings of Sabal species are noticably different than washingtonia. Sabal seedling strap-leaves are kind of straighter, more compact / hard / thick, and sometimes darker green in colour. I find them very easy to distinguish from washingtonias. If you take a closeup of your "sabal" seedlings and post a new pic we can say for sure. Growing sabals from seed is a long-term project as Andy said. Just check out the link to a guy in Georgia! He must be a patient man! I've had the same issue sprouting palm seeds in peat pellets. The root sprouts don't seem to be able to penetrate into the peat, so the seed itself elevates off the surface. I gently lifted them off the peat pellets and related them in little six pack seed starters with potting soil. I put the the long root down and seed near the surface and covered them lightly with mire soil. Most continued to grow normally from there, though a few never popped back above soil surface. I've concluded that the peat pellets aren't the best for palm seeds. So now I use a plastic tupperware container filled with moist vermiculite. Scatter the seeds on top, cover up and place on top of hot water heater. When they sprout and have a good root, I put them in potting soil

Never seen solar or battery power. Mine is large enough that I can put two standard size seed flats on it. I haven't noticed the electric bill difference. Of course, my wife pays all of the bills. Make sure you buy a thermostat for it though. Otherwise you will be pumping out 110F or so which usually cooks whatever you are growing. Cheap online, try amazon or google shopping.
