Palms growing in south Fl

I will get some pics of native palms and non native palm pics if anyone is interested. I would like to see pics of your area also.Here is a pic of some native sabal palmetto's at sun down.

Thanks David for the picture, its nice to see what other palms look like. There are so many times when I want to see what something looks like in a mature state, only to find a seedlin picture. Keep the pictures coming.

No palms up here, except for one guy about 15 miles away. I think he has some 10 or 20 foot sabals in his back yard, unprotected. I noticed them the other day for the first time, he must have brought them in from somewhere. THey are tall. Nothing else like it around here, except in my greenhouse.

Down in extreme SE AL we have lots of sabal palmetto (Sabal Palm), butia capitata (Pindo Palm), various small fan palms, several phoenix canariensis (Canary Island Date Palm), and a few cocos plumosa (Queen Palm). And if you count my yard you will also find a couple of Phoenix Dactylifera (Medjool Date Palm). I have a little spot sheltered on three sides in my yard...I'm thinking about trying a foxtail palm. Though I know it will require a LOT of care...protection from anything except very light frosts.

Ft Meyers is iffy. Really iffy. I would not go anna. Definitely go golden dorsett which originated in Nassau Bahamas and for the adventure go Tropic sweet. try to find them on m111. these will bear a few fruits in 2 years instead of maybe 5 for a standard tree, can be kept pretty low. Watch Very carefully any "knots" developing at graft level. paint the entire trunk with white latex paint to anything showing above ground for borers. Golden dorsett may even have two crops a year for you. Thin the apples to no more than one per flower cluster and 6" apart on the stem to get decent size. I grew them on I think m26 or 27 from Bay Laurel in Ca. with great success until the borer got it. It makes dark gray bark. I mixed bonide borer spray with the paint. the dorsett is happily good for all uses, it is like a golden delicious which is one of its parents only better. Spray with captan starting when apples are 1 1/2" or so for bitter rot if you need to. good luck.

Never heard from floridabear, and I was the only newbie at the meeting. I'm tired of following the DH's jobs all over the country, constantly moving, packing, changing addresses, etc. And never getting to settle in and make friends. Making some changes in my life. I'm going to try and find a club or two no matter where we move to, and make friends however I can. Mostly I just stay home and unpack boxes, take care of the house, whatever. Not much living, just being someone's accessory. So I'm making some much-needed changes. Hope I can connect with some good people and potential friends. Loved the meeting, and learned alot. Looking forward to the next meeting. Supposed to go tomorrow to the flower display at a local state park tomorrow with a couple of friends. Not sure if I'll be able to do so. Depends on how I feel in the AM. Just had a heart cath yesterday and just got home a little bit ago from the hospital. girlsaylor

Welcome! You'll find lots of enablers here to encourage you and to help you believe your new addiction is completely normal. I have a few plumeria and want more, more, more. I've discovered that you can purchase seeds on eBay for a very low price and start your own. You wouldn't want to rely on that because they take 2-3 years to bloom from seed but if you combine the seed habit with a few mature plants it's a pretty affordable way to get lots! And just wait until Lisa starts you on the fruit addiction. You'll fill up those 2 acres fast! Kate

There is going to be a rose show the same weekend as the Mounts Botanical garden spring plant sale. These rose show is open to the public and is FREE. The plant sale there is a charge to the mounts, but if you are interested in entering or just seeing the roses it is FREE. I really like these 2 Veitchia arecina's. I wonder how hard it would be to yank them out of the ground. They look to be the perfect size I am looking for. :-)

Parajubea coccoides and Trachycarpus in Oakland,Brahea edulis in Hayward (hometown), Med palms in Berkeley,CIDP in Pleasanton,inland bay area, and a self reproducing grove of Mexican fan palms,CIDP's and Acacias growing wild with willows and Sycamores in Fremont ca..all with in ten -20 minutes of home here in the eastbay area.
Oh,and in the first pic,to the far left is a Ceroxylon palm..behind it not seen are some great Jaunia palms. Palms that do well or even prefer our cool winters and mild dry summers.

The Beaucarnea and P.reclinata I can relate too-they grow here, BUT NOT LIKE THAT!
Jeez,my,about,17 year old Beaucarnea stands seven feet tall with several branches(after they flower is when they branch most or first,btw) and a base well over three foot wide. To get to the Florida size is another century?..
