whats happening with these seeds, please??

Hi, just checked my seeds for any signs of growth again as the soil is not very deep and even though they are in plastic trays, being on the heated base of the propagator, any root could get too hot I fear. All were planted on Dec 21st.

The Butia C are just like a handful of stones, hard as ever and no sign of germinating yet.

Another Sabal minor has sprouted.

The Trachycarpus F seeds are doing something but I don't know what, but I have my suspicions they are rotting, please take a look below and see if you have any suggestions....

Two have these swellings that don't feel soft and mushy but quite hard and almost knobbly/warty and cream/black in colour,(I think this is a bad sign??),they have no mould on them and another has a small point appearing (looking good, perhaps? will keep a close watch on this one)...all this is happening opposite the concave part of the seeds, where the eyes are.

Any ideas folks, what's going on here?? Not seen this happen before. TIA.

The Trachycarpus are germinating. Don't keep them too wet. Butia Capitata take a long time to germinate.

Turtile...so you reckon they are germinating then....I feel really silly for posting now, but they look so strange as though they are really going bad and pushing out a load of goodness knows what!! The lumpy bit is quite lage compared to the seed, I honestly thought they had got the rot. Will keep them on the drier side of wet. They had been washed carefully for the pic to try and show what was happening. Didn't notice this kind of thing with the Washingtonias, they just seemed to push a spike out quite 'cleanly'. Thanks, will watch them closely now and keep my fingers crossed for them, and I won't be discarding the Butia seeds just yet.

I used to order from Harvest Moon - they had great selection and prices, but last year I had great difficulty getting my paid order from them. The complete order eventually arrived a month after numerous emails, most of which went unanswered. I had already decided to never order from them again. Hi I grow VFT in winter due to the s. florida climate . Not only no chill period they hate the humid summers lol They grow well for me during winter but is a real hassle to keep in the fridge so I just grew them as long as they survived .Starting in Oct ( stratified seeds of course) and they usually give up the ghost by late May. Would assume in your zone you're growing them as a houseplant?? Last several years I've not planted any but it can be done might even be better in your zone??? gary

naola I suspect you planted them too soon if you're in zone 5 and the weather turned cool. Most beans shouldn't be planted until soil temperatures are about 65 degrees or they either won't germinate or they'll germinate so slowly in the cool soil that many will rot in the ground. Little tiny holes in bean leaves usually means the culprit is flea beetles. Maybe you can plant the beans again when the soil temps are optimal. And do crawdads eat bean seedlings?

what happens if I grind up seeds?

All depends on what variety of pepper you're dealing with. Some varieties have a not so pleasant taste(bitterness). But with superhots, I grind the whole thing. When I do the mash thing to make my sauce, I run them whole through the processor. After the fermentation, when pureeing, they go through the blender also. But then I run it all through a strainer and it catches quite a few of the left over seeds. So, my finished product is a nice emulsification that's almost like a ketchup, but not quite so thick. Looks like they are just germinating. Put'em back in the soil and they should be fine.

This may be sort of gross, but how to they smell? Decay will definitely have an odor. Look like the bulges are on the convex side (not the concave side). I've never dug up windmill seeds to see how they germinate, always just left them in the pot to come up undisturbed.

If something happens to them I'm sure you can get more seed easily in the UK.

They went back into the soil straight away as I didnt want them to dry out. Just checked and there is no detectable pong with them...as you say, rot will smell bad, so hopefully all is ok. They look the same, no change as yet. Only reason I dug them up was to check for rot and to see if they had sprouted that the root wasnt getting to hot as the compost isnt very deep in the trays....plus I am nosey!!
