Older milky spore go bad?
Comments (2)It should be perfect. Milky spore is the spores of a bacterial disease affecting only insects. Spores, by definition, have a long shelf life. They represent a part of the biological life cycle that the bacterium goes into when it knows it will not have favorable living conditions for an extended period of time. I see it sold in 50-pound bags. I should add that I rarely see it for the same reason Lowe's is getting rid of it. It is a specialty item for the rare organic gardener who has problems with grubs....See MoreHas anyone tried Milky Spore for grub worms??
Comments (18)I read the A&M link. It wouldn't be the first time A&M was wrong about something. Plus they're about as Agri-business as you can get. Their testing of organic methods is often suspect. Their conclusion about the ineffectiveness of Milky Spore could be simply because they didn't account for it's 2-3 year establishment time. I have no proof about the effectiveness of Milky Spore. I applied it at the proper time according to instructions about 25 years ago. I haven't had noticeable grub damage in my lawn since then. Maybe it's luck, or it's attributable to other factors or methods. A few of those years I treated the lawn for fleas, but most years not. I live in South Texas with alkaline clay soil. The only thing milky spore or lawn insecticide treatments can be expected to do is to kill the larvae in the soil. The adults are not feeding when you see them bouncing off your exterior lights or your forehead. They lay their eggs and then die. The prime time to treat them is as soon as you stop seeing them around your outdoor lights. They've laid their eggs and died. The larvae are near the surface, small, and tender. When I dig in my yard, I often see a few grubs. The thing to remember is that, regardless of what control method you use, you can never kill them all. The only time you won't see grubs is when they turn into adults and come out of the ground to fly around bouncing off of things till they lay eggs and die. rangier...See MoreMilky spore
Comments (5)squarefooterg, MSD may take 1 year to become resident in the soil but what that means is the spores have been ingested by the grubs, grown in the grubs, killed the grubs, and are now spores again and are there in the soil. That 1 year has nothing to do with whether or not the spores you apply this year will kill grubs this year, just that after this year you will have a larger population of the disease spores in your soil than is normal. Since the Bacillus popilliae bacterium are very common and present in very low numbers you probably have some in your soil now, just in populations too low to be effective as a grub control....See MoreMilky Spores
Comments (4)Not a waste of time or money, but you might want to call your LOCAL extension office about this. Milky spore does not work well in all parts of the country, for some reason. If you are looking for a fast solution to your JB problem, then this is not it. It will, however, have an impact in the future. Very worth doing some more research on it, on a local basis. Also, I would suspect that the price of the product will be pretty consistent everywhere. Make sure you have an accurate measurement of your property so that you don't have to buy anymore than you need. Perhaps you and a neighbor can go in on a larger amount? A little goes a long way....and one inoculation is said to last for years and years (depending on soil, etc. That's why a call to extension is important.)...See MoreThe Metal Peddler
