Record rains about to plague California!

Florida's palms were damaged by the cold now it looks like California is about to experience its own weather/agricultural (and possibly deadly)disaster. Based on what the National Weather Service has to say, major (historic) rains about to hit the state. You can wrap palms and use X-Mas lights for cold, but what do you do about the rain? (Price of produce is really going to skyrocket now!!)

Floridas weather caused much more damage to plants than california's upcoming probelm, but that caused few if any human deaths (animals and plants on the otherhand had probelms). But california will be seeing loss of life if even one mudslide occurs in a populated area. Plus whatever plants are in the way will be creamed. You can replace a plant, but you cant replace a person.
And price for all agriculture is about to soar since just about every mild area in the country has been or will be affected by extreme weather. Hopefully it wont be too bad, but I think that these storms have potential.

Like everyone, I've heard of the predicted record rains, but today I learned also very strong winds are expected. Batten down the hatches, trim trees for a hurricane, stake weak palms, move delicate plants under cover. Wind can do more damage than rain.

We have the same scenario up here in north/central New Hampshire. Days and days of nothing but straight rain, loads of bugs, deer eating my new rosebuds just as my rose season is starting (YES, it is JUST NOW starting). With over 350 rosebushes, many of them the old once-bloomers who only have 2-3 weeks of bloom per year and are trying to bloom in the midst of all this..... most roses are flopped over into the mud, beaten down from the weight of water-logged and balled buds. This is so discouraging, considering the long, tedious wait and the very short growing season. Pretty soon, the japanese beetles will be here right on target for the first of July to munch on my beauties til the killing frosts in October. Not to mention the affect all this rain has had on the weed population. There are some very healthy weeds going on out there. (sigh) Still, I will NEVER give up on my roses! I refuse to let bugs, rain, wind, blackspot, mildew, deer, and the arctic blast of a zone 4 winter steal my passion for roses away from me. It just makes it more difficult, and yet... so much more rewarding when I have those perfect blooms. Cheer up! It has to end sometime. Celeste

Solution ... PCV Piping and elbows as required, and a backflow limiter. A hookup to the main water source opposite side of the backflow limited with a rainbird digital controller. Last but not least, possibly a higher water bill. It's better than standing around with a hose or a watering pail in your hand. ;) You might also try some sort of shading like a gazebo or shade cloth to help with water retention. At the very least, vermiculite.

All great. I should plant more E.compactus(is that what it is now?) instead of waiting for one to fill an area. Hardier than people would think. I planted a dwarf P.saundersi in the ground two years ago-doing well,but dwarf is dwarf and I might be better off growing it in a pot to see better. Ok,dr.Lizard-post more pics!

Hi Bill! This is news that made me smile this morning!! It just doesn't surprise me if Psycho doesnt even blink for winter! This tree has a mind of its own and just wants to grow like there is no tomorrow!!! You all have had a mild winter while we in the east, have had more snow and frigid temps then ever before. Just last night I was walking like a penguin to keep from falling up north. It's awful... But I know your flip flops are getting plenty of use, while our snow boots are the preferred choice! I can't wait for warm weather. I'm so cold!!!!! So I guess we would have lost the contest this year on the last bloom ? Lol! Take care ! Laura

update on California storms, here in the desert since Sunday night we've had 2+ in. of rain! inland/socal got 4+ in. tornado warning for long beach(la county) & hunington beach east towards temecula (orange county to riverside county) two more storm coming in, 3rd one suppose to be the more rain/snow maker! el nino you think? jk! be safe everyone cuz there moving eastward. 4 people got trapped in running water cuz they decided to take a walk near the mojave river by my area & got washed out! come on people think & be safe out there!

How far does the rain actually penetrate the soil there? Does it get soggy or does it just hit the top and run off into ditches?

Im sure the soil is so dry that at first a lot of it is just runoff. Thats probably why the rivers are so violent right now. It gets even worse once the rain does starts to penetrate the soil because then you are getting ingredients for things like mudslides. The rain is so consitent, That the soil is probably getting pretty muddy. I wouldnt be surprised to hear about a few mudslides in the near future. But this is California's. rainy season, factor that in with the El Nino (which usually means more rain for the west coast) and you have a very rainy month or 2.
I hope that if any mudslides do occur, they dont occur in populated areas because lots of people have cliffside houses in areas like LA, and are very popuated, so a mudslide would be really fatal.
